Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. First, it fails to meet the length requirement, containing 130 words against the 150-word minimum (with some words copied from the prompt uncounted). While it attempts to report some main features, such as the highest sodium in dinner and the high added sugar in snacks, the information is limited and under-developed. For instance, the overview lacks precision and the comparisons between elements are simplistic or occasionally inaccurate. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the full word count is met and provide a more comprehensive overview covering all three nutrient types across all meal categories with greater accuracy.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response displays some organization, but there is no clear overall progression. The writing is fragmented into very short, poorly structured paragraphs that lack proper formatting and logical flow. Cohesive devices are inadequate and repetitive, relying on basic phrases like 'on the other hand' without effectively linking ideas together. Referencing is also sometimes unclear, making the relationship between the data points difficult to follow. To improve, the writer needs to group related information into cohesive paragraphs, use a wider variety of transition markers naturally, and ensure a logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body details to a clear summary.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with words like 'percentage', 'meal', and 'element' recurring frequently. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'all day meals', 'more in lunch then other element', and 'superior then', which cause some difficulty for the reader. Furthermore, spelling and word choice lack precision. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, incorporate less common academic terms related to data reporting (such as 'proportion', 'consumption', and 'significantly higher'), and ensure correct word choice and prepositional usage.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing articles ('The pie chart illustrate that average percentages...'), subject-verb agreement issues, and incorrect comparative structures ('more... then' instead of 'more... than'). Punctuation is also poorly handled, with run-on sentences lacking proper terminal punctuation and capitalisation. To move up to the next band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors by checking verb forms, plurals, and sentence boundaries.
