IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts illustrates the proportion of three types of nutrients eg; sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar, found in normal meals consumed by americans.
Overall, average american dinner was found to be highly concentrated in sodium and saturated fat. While the snacks were found to have the most added sugars of them all. Another noticable element was that, average person's breakfast in USA had almost the same proportion of all three nutrients concerned .
Firstly, the sodium content contributed 43% in the normal US dinners, while the lunch accounted for 29% sodium, standing just after the dinner in sodium concentration. moreover, sodium content accounted equally at 14% in both the meals of snack and breakfast.
Secondly, as far as saturated fats are concerned, so, they were obeserved to be the most in dinners at 37%, while the luch standing the next at 26% presence. On the other hand, unlike sodium where braekfast and snack had contained equal percentage of nutrient, the content of saturated fat in usual snack remained higher at 21%, when compared to the breakfast, which accounted for this nutrient at 16% only.
Lastly, added sugar remained the highest in snacks at 42%, following this was dinner, contributing to 23% of consumed added sugars by americans. While, the breakfast contributed the same percentage of 16%, which was also noted for saturated fats. Lunch on other side, contributed 19% for average taken added suagrs by americans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response identifies the main patterns accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. It also reports the key figures correctly, including sodium at 43% for dinner and 14% for breakfast and snacks, and added sugar at 42% for snacks. The overview is relevant, and the comparisons across meal types show a clear understanding of the charts. The observation that breakfast has similar proportions is broadly supported, although the figures are not identical: sodium is 14%, while the other two nutrients are 16%. To strengthen the report further, make this distinction explicit and avoid broad wording such as “highly concentrated,” which can imply more than the percentages show.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for sodium, saturated fat and added sugar. This makes the information easy to follow, and sequencing expressions such as “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “Lastly” help signal progression. Comparisons within each nutrient section are generally logical. However, the repeated formula of listing the highest value and then the next value makes the report somewhat mechanical, and some linking is awkward—for example, “Secondly, as far as saturated fats are concerned, so” combines two transitions unnecessarily. The final paragraph also begins several sentences with “While” or “On the other side,” which weakens the flow. Use more varied comparisons and connect related patterns across the charts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant topic vocabulary, including “proportion,” “sodium content,” “saturated fats” and “added sugars,” so the reader can understand the subject and most comparisons. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “accounted for” and “contributed.” However, the range is limited by repeated use of “content,” “contributed” and “accounted,” while several choices are unnatural or imprecise, including “highly concentrated,” “normal US dinners” and “average taken added sugars.” Spelling errors such as “noticable,” “obeserved,” “braekfast” and “suagrs” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully; alternatives such as “share,” “proportion” and “made up” can help vary repeated wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including contrast clauses with “while” and “where,” and most of the data remains understandable. However, errors occur often enough to limit grammatical control. The opening sentence has subject–verb disagreement: “The pie charts illustrates” should be “The pie charts illustrate.” Other problems include “average american dinner was found,” which needs an article or plural construction, and “the lunch standing the next,” which is not a complete grammatical clause. Some sentences also have awkward clause construction, as in “While, the breakfast contributed…” and “unlike sodium where braekfast and snack had contained.” Practise forming complete clauses and checking agreement, articles and punctuation, especially when combining comparisons.
