Student answer (Band 6.5)

The three pie charts illustrate the avarage prportions of sodium, saturated fats and sugar consumed by people in USA in four typical meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.

Overall, dinner accounts for largest proportion of sodium and satuirated fat consumption, whereas, as contributes the hightest percentage of added sugar. In contrast, breakfast generally represents the smallest prpportion pf these nutrients.

Regarding sodium, diunner makes up the highest percentage , at 43 % followed by lunch at 29% . Snacks and btreakfast each accountv for 14% of sodium intake. A similar pattern can be seen in saturated fat consumption, with dinner again recording the highest figure , at 37% . Lunch contribute 26%,While snacks account for 21% . Breakfast has the lowest proportion,at 16%

The pattern for aaded sugar is quite different . Snacks are main source, representing 42% of the total, which is considerably higher than the figures for the other meals . Dinner accounts for 23%,while lunch makes uu 19%. Breakfast has the lowest proportion of added sugara, at 16% . Therefore, while dinner is the main contributor to sodium and saturated fat intake, snacks are responsible for the largest share of added sugar consumptipon.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response selects the main features accurately and supports them with relevant figures: dinner is correctly identified as the largest source of sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks lead for added sugar (42%). It also notes the low breakfast shares and compares the meal patterns, so the overview is clear and the data are well chosen. The final sentence reinforces the key contrast rather than introducing an unsupported conclusion. To make the account more fully developed, state the overall pattern across all three nutrients more precisely—for example, that dinner is the leading meal for the first two, whereas snacks dominate sugar, and breakfast is lowest for saturated fat and sugar but tied with snacks for sodium. The coverage is strong, with only minor scope for sharper synthesis.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The information is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on sodium and saturated fat, and a final paragraph on added sugar. This grouping makes the comparisons easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Regarding sodium,” and “A similar pattern” help signal the progression. The concluding contrast also gives the report a clear sense of completion. Cohesion is not always fully smooth, however: “whereas, as contributes” disrupts the overview, and some commas are separated from the preceding words or used inconsistently. The repeated “Breakfast has the lowest proportion” is understandable but slightly formulaic. More controlled punctuation and a few varied comparison structures would make the progression more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses a reasonable range of task-relevant language, including “accounts for,” “represents,” “intake,” “main source,” and “considerably higher.” These choices help describe proportions and comparisons, and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, spelling errors are conspicuous, including “avarage,” “satuirated,” “btreakfast,” and “consumptipon,” while several phrases are awkward or imprecise, such as “as contributes the hightest percentage” and “snacks are responsible for the largest share.” These issues limit the accuracy and control of the vocabulary. Proofread carefully and favour precise collocations such as “the highest proportion of added sugar” and “contribute to nutrient intake.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

There is a mix of simple and more developed sentence forms, including the overview contrast beginning “Overall” and the comparison clause “which is considerably higher than the figures for the other meals.” Most relationships between the data are still understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, though: “lunch contribute 26%” has subject–verb disagreement, and “whereas, as contributes” is an incomplete or malformed clause. In “with dinner again recording the highest figure,” the participial construction is acceptable, but punctuation around it is inconsistent. Several sentences also omit or misplace commas, which affects readability. Aim to check agreement and clause structure, especially when combining contrasts, while retaining the useful variety of sentence patterns already attempted.
