Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The three provided pie charts below illustrate the total percentage in breakfast, lunch, dinner and snaks of three types of nutrients, sodium, saturated fat and added suger, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Overall, it is immediately apparent that the proportion of sodium is dinner recorded the largest percentage. Additionally, added sugar in snaks was an immense figure. In breakfast, all three types of nutrients registered almost at equal levels.
Regarding breakfasts, the proportion of sodium, fat, and sugar was almost the same at 14, 16, and 16, respectively. Similarly, the proportion of sodium and fat in dinner experienced the largest figures at 43% sodium and 37% saturated fatBy contrast, dinners contain only 23% sugar. According to the three charts, snaks contain different level of nutrients, sodium at 14%, saturated fat at 21% and sugar was the largest proportion at 42%. The contents of lunches were totaly different compared to other meals. Sodium in lunches accounted for 29%, saturated fat for 26% and sugar at 19%. Thus, only in breakfasts the percentages were slightly the same. Other contents changed among meals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover all three nutrients and all four meals, and the main patterns are mostly accurate: dinner has the highest sodium and saturated-fat shares, while snacks have the highest added-sugar share. The overview also identifies breakfast as broadly similar across nutrients. These clear, relevant features meet the task well. To make the report more complete and precise, develop comparisons more consistently: for example, note that dinner is also the largest meal category for sodium and saturated fat, whereas added sugar peaks in snacks and is lowest at breakfast. The phrase “the proportion of sodium is dinner recorded the largest percentage” makes the overview difficult to interpret. The figures are otherwise reported accurately, but some comparisons and the significance of the contrasting patterns remain underdeveloped.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph that moves through breakfast, dinner, snacks, and lunch. This gives the information an overall coherent arrangement. However, progression within the body is not always smooth, and some linking is mechanical or unclear. “Similarly” introduces dinner even though the comparison with breakfast is not clearly explained, while “By contrast” does not specify what dinner is being contrasted with. The final sentences repeat the point that breakfast values are similar without adding much. Use clearer grouping—for example, compare dinner and snacks as the leading categories for different nutrients—and make each transition express the relationship between the figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “registered,” and “largest percentage,” so the reader can generally understand the comparisons. There is also some attempt to vary wording rather than repeat “percentage” throughout. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “immense figure,” “experienced the largest figures,” and “contents of lunches.” Spelling errors in “snaks,” “suger,” and “totaly” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional language for describing data, such as “accounted for the highest share” or “the proportion of added sugar.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and the comparisons easier to follow.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the contrast introduced by “By contrast.” Most of the intended information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors make relationships unclear. For example, “the proportion of sodium is dinner recorded the largest percentage” has a faulty sentence structure, and “saturated fatBy contrast” lacks punctuation between two clauses. In “saturated fat for 26% and sugar at 19%,” the parallel structure is inconsistent. Check that each sentence has a clear subject and verb, use consistent grammatical forms when listing figures, and proofread punctuation at sentence boundaries. More accurate control of these structures would strengthen the report.
