IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The three pie charts illustrate the average proportion of three type of nutrients, namely Sodium, Saturated Fat, and added sugar consumed in typical meals consumed in the United States.
Overall, it is clear that the dinner accounted for the highest proportions of Sodium and Saturated fat. In comparison, snack represented the highest figure in added sugar consumption. While, breakfast accounted for lowest share in all three categories.
At the first glance, the figure for dinner represented by 43% of Sodium intake, 37% of Saturated fat intake and 23% accounted for added sugar. Similarly, the percentage of sodium, Saturated fat and added sugar consumed by people represented by 29%, 26%, and 19% respectively.
Turning to remaining details, the proportion of snack made up 14% of total for sodium, compared with Saturated fat and Added sugar, this figure stood at 21% and 42%. The figure for breakfast remain unchanged at 16% for Saturated fat and Added sugar. In comparison, the figure of snack represented by 14% for Sodium.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. Most figures you report are correct, including dinner’s 43%, 37% and 23%, and the snack values of 14%, 21% and 42%. However, the overview says breakfast is lowest in all three categories, which is not true for added sugar: breakfast and lunch are both below dinner, but breakfast’s 16% is lower than lunch’s 19%, while snacks are highest. More importantly, the response omits the breakfast sodium figure and does not clearly compare all meal types. To strengthen the report, give a precise overview and cover the less-developed breakfast and lunch comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and the final paragraph groups snack and breakfast figures. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is uneven: the third paragraph repeats dinner and lunch figures, then the final paragraph returns to snack and breakfast without a clear comparison across the three nutrients. Linking is sometimes mechanical or awkward, as in “Similarly” and “Turning to remaining details”; “While” also begins a fragment after a full stop. Organise the body paragraphs around meal patterns or nutrient categories, and use linking phrases to show meaningful contrasts rather than simply signal another detail.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounted for,” “share,” and “intake,” and the nutrient names are generally clear. The wording is varied enough to communicate the main comparisons, though some choices are imprecise or repetitive. For example, “the figure for dinner represented by 43%” is an awkward collocation, and “the percentage … consumed by people represented by” repeats “represented” rather than stating the data directly. “Three type of nutrients” also has a word-form/plural problem. Prefer concise reporting verbs such as “stood at,” “made up,” or “was,” and use “nutrient types” or “three nutrients” for a more natural description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “While, breakfast accounted for lowest share…” and the comparison beginning “The proportion of snack made up…”. Meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems remain. “Three type” needs a plural noun, and “the lowest share” requires an article. The sentence beginning “While” is incomplete when separated by a full stop, while “the figure for dinner represented by 43%” lacks a clear finite verb. In “the figure for breakfast remain unchanged,” the verb does not agree with the singular subject. Build complete sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and check articles, agreement and punctuation when joining contrasting clauses.
