IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie charts compare the average percentages meals of three kinds of nutrients, all of namely sodium, saturated fat and added sugar which may be unhealthy if eaten too muchin the usa.
Overall, the sodium consistently recorded the highest in the dinner. While the sodium was the lowest in the snack during the period. It is clear that all nutrients experinced the growth in the unhealthy eaten such as breakfast, snak, lunch and dinner at the given time framework.
The sodium led the ranking in the dinner with 43percentage in the whole time. the saturated fat was the 37 proportion in dinner. The sodium reached at 29% in the lunch. Whereas, the sodium had the lowest in the snack and breakfast throughout the perid time of the USA typical meals purchased.
in the final analysis, added suger has risen sharply in the snack at 42% and strenghthering its leading position. FOllowed by the added suger 23% in the dinner. While the breakfast still lowest at added suger 16%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify several relevant features, including dinner as the largest share for sodium and saturated fat, and snacks as the largest share for added sugar. However, the overview is partly inaccurate: sodium is not consistently highest at dinner, since its snack share (14%) is tied with breakfast, and the claim that all nutrients grew across meal types is unsupported by these static percentages. Some comparisons are also incomplete or unclear; for example, you give dinner and lunch figures for sodium but omit the saturated-fat and added-sugar lunch values. To strengthen the response, summarise the main contrasts accurately and compare all three nutrients across meals rather than describing a general rise or ranking without clear context.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic paragraph structure, with an introduction, an overview and paragraphs containing selected figures. This gives the reader some organisation. However, the progression between ideas is not consistently clear: the overview moves from dinner to snacks and then claims growth across meal types, while the final paragraph begins with “in the final analysis” without clearly linking to the earlier comparisons. Connectors such as “Whereas” and “While” are sometimes used to start incomplete or loosely connected statements. Grouping the information by nutrient or by meal, and using clear comparison sentences, would make the sequence easier to follow. Avoid repeating the same point about sodium being lowest in snacks and breakfast.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “pie charts,” “ranking,” “percentage” and “leading position,” and the nutrient names are generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “the unhealthy eaten” does not clearly describe nutrient percentages, and “reached at 29%” is not a natural way to report a figure. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “experinced,” “snak,” “perid,” “suger” and “strenghthering.” Use precise chart language such as “accounted for,” “share” and “proportion,” and check spelling carefully so that the data remains easy to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentence forms, including the opening sentence and the contrast beginning “While,” but control is inconsistent. Several sentences are fragments or lack a clear grammatical structure, such as “While the sodium was the lowest in the snack during the period” and “The saturated fat was the 37 proportion in dinner.” The opening also has a faulty construction in “the average percentages meals,” and the sentence about nutrients experiencing growth is difficult to follow. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, particularly at the start of sentences and in “FOllowed.” Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use simple comparison structures accurately before adding more complex clauses.
