IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts present data on the quantity of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA. Excess of these nutrients in meals can cause health problems.
Overall, sodium and saturated fat is consumed in large quantities in dinner, but their quantity is the least in snacks. Moreover, the added sugar is mostly consumed in snacks, and the least in breakfast. The use of these nutrients in lunch is moderate.
The data shows the quantity of sodium in the daily meals an average American household. It shows that the intake of sodium at dinner is about 49%, which is very high. However, it quantity is quite small in the snacks eaten throughout the day. Furthermore, the data shows that the usage of sodium in lunch is 29%. Lastly, breakfast and lunch uses the least amount of sodium, that is 14%.
Along with this, the data gives us insight to the amount of saturated fat in the typical meal. About a large quantity of 37% of the fat consumed in dinner, 26% at lunch, and 21% in snacks. The breakfast has the least amount of saturated fat in it.
Lastly, the pie chart depicts the average consumption of added sugar in the meals. A big chunk of these artificial sweetners, about 42%, are consumed through snacks. Moreover, dinner has a quantity of about 23%. Lunch has 19%, while breakfast has the least quantity of about 16%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main patterns: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks account for the most added sugar. You also cover all three nutrients and provide several figures. However, one important figure is inaccurate: dinner accounts for 43% of sodium, not 49%. The overview also says snacks have the lowest sodium and saturated-fat shares, but breakfast is lower for saturated fat (16% versus 21% in snacks). The statement that breakfast and lunch both have the least sodium is unclear, since breakfast and snacks are tied at 14%. Some details, such as the lunch pattern being “moderate,” are not developed through comparison. More precise reporting and a clearer overview would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the nutrients. This makes the information easy to locate, and linking phrases such as “Moreover,” “Furthermore,” and “Lastly” help signal progression. However, the organisation is somewhat mechanical because each nutrient is reported in turn without much direct comparison across the charts. Some references are unclear: “it quantity” does not clearly identify the nutrient, and “breakfast and lunch uses the least amount” conflicts with the figures and makes the point difficult to follow. The overview could also group the key contrasts more efficiently. Use clearer referencing and connect related figures across meals to create smoother progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “intake,” “consumed,” “quantity,” and “depicts,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive: “quantity” and “amount” recur frequently, while “use of these nutrients” is not a natural way to describe the proportions in meals. Informal expressions such as “a big chunk” are less suitable for an academic report, and “artificial sweetners” is both misspelled and an unsupported description of added sugar. Aim for precise chart language and accurate collocations, such as “accounted for” or “made up.” This would make the report more formal and reduce ambiguity without requiring unnecessarily complex vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, and most of the information remains understandable. Some grammatical errors, however, affect accuracy. In the overview, “sodium and saturated fat is consumed” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “their quantity is the least” also has unclear number and structure. In “However, it quantity,” the possessive form is incorrect, and “breakfast and lunch uses” should use a plural verb. The phrase “About a large quantity of 37% of the fat consumed in dinner, 26% at lunch, and 21% in snacks” is a sentence fragment rather than a complete statement. Check agreement, possessives, and sentence completeness, especially when listing figures. More consistently controlled complex sentences would improve accuracy.
