IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The three pie chart illustrate the proportion of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar consumed by people in the USA during different meals of day, namely breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
overall, dinner is the main source of sodium and saturated fat while snack contain highest amount of added sugar. in contrast breakfast contributes the least three types of nutrients.
with regard tosoduim, dinner account for 43%of toltal intake followed by lunch at 29% both breakfast and snack make up acsmaller proportion at 14% each.Asimilar pattern is obsvered for saturated fat where dinner is the largest contributor with 37% followed bt luncj at 26% snack at 21% and breakfast at 16%.
in the trem of added sugar the partten is reversed snacks are responsibale for the majority at 42% which is significantly higher then other meals dinner contain 23% luncj 19% and breakfast16% of added sugars. so sugar consumption is the opposite of soduim and fat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response selects the main features accurately: dinner is highest for sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks lead for added sugar (42%). It also reports the remaining meal figures correctly and gives a useful overview contrasting dinner’s contribution with the snack pattern. This makes the summary clear and well supported by the chart. The comparison that breakfast contributes the least across all three nutrients is slightly over-generalised, since breakfast and snacks are tied for the lowest sodium share, and breakfast is not the lowest for saturated fat. To strengthen the response further, state that qualification precisely and make the overview’s comparisons more exact rather than describing breakfast as uniformly lowest.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable progression: an introduction, an overview, then details on sodium and saturated fat followed by added sugar. This grouping helps the reader compare related data, and phrases such as “with regard to” and “in contrast” signal the intended relationships. However, the progression is not consistently smooth: the final sentence repeats the contrast already made in the overview, and the transition into the added-sugar figures is abrupt. Several ideas are crowded into long, loosely punctuated sentences, making relationships between figures less easy to follow. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more deliberate linking, and avoid repeating the same summary point at the end.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “contributor,” “intake,” and “majority,” and it attempts to vary how the figures are described. However, spelling and word-choice errors are conspicuous, including “soduim,” “toltal,” “obsvered,” “responsibale,” and “partten.” Some phrasing is also imprecise or unnatural, such as “the part of added sugar” and “the least three types of nutrients.” These errors reduce the accuracy and fluency of the vocabulary, even though the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Proofread carefully and favour standard collocations such as “accounted for,” “the lowest proportion,” and “added-sugar intake.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts both simple and more developed sentence forms, for example, “Asimilar pattern is observed for saturated fat where…” and the contrast introduced by “in contrast.” The main comparisons remain understandable, but grammatical control is inconsistent. The opening has subject–verb disagreement (“The three pie chart illustrate”), and the overview contains agreement errors (“snack contain”). Missing articles and punctuation also affect sentence structure, while the long data sentences often run together without clear boundaries. Work on plural subjects and verbs, article use, and separating clauses with full stops or appropriate conjunctions. More accurate control of these basic patterns would make the comparisons easier to read.
