Student answer (Band 5.0)
The pie charts illustrate the average proportion of Sodium, Saturated fat and suggar content in meals consumed by Americans.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the main pattern that sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner, and you correctly report several figures, including 43% for sodium at dinner and 37% for saturated fat. However, the report addresses the charts only partially: it gives little information about added sugar beyond the overview, and the saturated-fat comparison stops after one figure. Some wording also makes the data unclear, such as “43 of Americans,” which omits the percentage sign. The response is 128 words, below the required 150, and this limits how fully you can select and compare the key features. To improve, cover all three nutrients with accurate percentages and include the contrasting snack peak for added sugar.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing details. This helps the reader identify the general purpose, and transitions such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “On the other hand” show attempts to connect ideas. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph contains only one comparison and the added-sugar data are not developed. Some linking is repetitive or awkward, and the relationship in “all three nutrients are compared to lower in the breakfast” is difficult to follow. Organise the details more systematically—for example, compare dinner and breakfast patterns first, then explain how added sugar differs by peaking in snacks—and use clear references between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average proportion,” “highest proportion,” “consumption,” and “contained,” so the topic is generally clear. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “suggar,” “containe,” “forr,” “snak,” “amost,” and “proporation.” Phrases such as “Sodium rich foods” and “the largest proportion of fat” are also imprecise for describing percentages in meals. Aim to use accurate terms consistently, such as “share,” “percentage,” and “accounted for,” and check spelling before submitting. More precise collocations would make the comparisons easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “When compared to the dinner…” and a relative clause in “which is the largest proportion of fat.” However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “Sodium and saturated fat are higher in dinner and less containe in the breakfast” lacks a clear grammatical comparison, while “which consumed by 43 of Americans” has an incomplete verb structure. Articles and prepositions are also inconsistent, as in “the dinner” and “in the breakfast.” Practise complete subject–verb structures and compare percentages directly, such as “Dinner accounts for 43% of sodium intake.”
