IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie charts show the proportion of contained nutrients in meal during breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner, which is consumed in the United States of America.
Overall, there are three different nutrients were included ( sodium, saturated fat and added sugar). Sodium and Saturated fat both have quit similarties, and added sugar is completely opposite of that.
Regarding Sodium, it is highly consumed in dinner (43%), followed by lunch at second, with around 29%. While Snack and Breakfast both shared the same amount of containt (14%).
In terms of Saturated fat, again dinner is the main source for that with nearly 37%, Followed by lunch with 26%. However, snacks contain approximately 21% of fat. At last, Breakfast is just less than 20%.
Regarding added sugar, Snack accounts for the highest number of percentages (42%), With dinner at second, at 23%. Whereas breakfast and lunch shares nearly 16% and 19% respectively

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover all three nutrients and identify the main contrasts accurately: sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner (43% and 37%), while added sugar is highest in snacks (42%). The overview also recognises that the first two patterns are similar and sugar differs, giving the report a clear central message. Most figures are reported correctly, although “breakfast and lunch shares nearly 16% and 19%” reverses the values: breakfast is 16% and lunch is 19%. Some comparisons are less fully developed—for example, you could explicitly compare the snack and dinner shares for added sugar, or note that breakfast is the lowest meal for saturated fat. More precise coverage of these relationships would make the summary more complete and better supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for the nutrient categories. This makes the information easy to locate, and phrases such as “Regarding Sodium” and “In terms of Saturated fat” help signal each shift. The progression is generally logical, but the linking is sometimes mechanical, with repeated “Regarding” and “followed by” constructions. Some transitions also create awkward or incomplete relationships, such as “While Snack and Breakfast both shared…” and “Whereas breakfast and lunch…”, which are not smoothly integrated with the surrounding sentences. Grouping the similar sodium and saturated-fat patterns together, then contrasting them with added sugar, and varying the linking language would create a more fluent progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounts for,” “main source,” and “followed by,” so the reader can understand the comparisons. However, the range and control are uneven, with noticeable spelling and word-choice problems: “quit similarties,” “containt,” and “highly consumed” are inaccurate or unnatural in this context. “At last” is also not an appropriate way to introduce the smallest figure, and “number of percentages” is unnecessarily wordy. These choices do not prevent the main message from being understood, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for accurate collocations such as “similar patterns,” “share,” and “the lowest proportion,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple statements and more complex comparisons, including “While Snack and Breakfast both shared…” and “Whereas breakfast and lunch…”. However, control is inconsistent, and several sentence structures are incomplete or contain agreement errors. “Overall, there are three different nutrients were included” combines two incompatible structures; use “Overall, the charts include three nutrients.” In “breakfast and lunch shares,” the plural subject requires “share,” while “which is consumed” does not agree clearly with the plural meal categories. Capitalisation within sentences is also inconsistent, as in “Followed” and “With.” These errors are generally understandable, but more reliable sentence construction and agreement are needed alongside the attempted complexity.
