IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts display the average proportions in regular meals of three kinds of nutrients, all of which may be bad for health if consumed heavily.
Overall, it appears that dinner is the unhealthiest meal with the highest percentages of sodium and saturated fat while breakfast is the healthiest meal with the owest percentages of all three nutrients. Additionally, sanck has the concerning level of added sugar.
Dinner contains mostly sodium and saturated fat with 43% and 37% respectively. Sodium also dominates the lunch with 29% followed by the 26% of saturated fat.
Added sugar is heavily presence in snack at 42% although sodium's precentage is quite low in snack at only 14% the lowest sodium level across all meals. Breakfast contains the least proportions of all three nutrients with 14% sodium and 16% each of saturated fat and added sugar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks account for the most added sugar (42%). The overview also notes breakfast’s low figures, and the specific comparisons for lunch and snacks are relevant. This covers the key features, though some are less fully reported: for example, the response does not give lunch’s added-sugar figure or compare the meal shares across all three nutrients. The phrase “dinner contains mostly sodium and saturated fat” is also imprecise because the percentages describe each nutrient’s share across meals, not the composition of dinner. The response is 141 words, below the required 150; develop the comparisons with a few accurate details to meet the task requirement and make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs of supporting details. The progression from the broad pattern to dinner and lunch, then snacks and breakfast, is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Additionally,” and “although” help connect the points, but some transitions feel mechanical, and the final paragraph combines snack and breakfast information without a clear comparison between them. The reference in “the lowest sodium level across all meals” is understandable, though the paragraph could guide the reader more smoothly through the figures. Grouping details by nutrient or comparing meals consistently would strengthen progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “average proportions,” “highest percentages,” “dominates,” and “followed by.” However, several word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems reduce precision: “unhealthiest meal” overstates what the chart shows, “the concerning level” is awkward, and “Added sugar is heavily presence” uses the wrong form. There are also misspellings such as “owest,” “sanck,” and “precentage.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main comparisons, but they are noticeable and limit the accuracy of the vocabulary. Choose neutral reporting language and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple statements and more complex forms, including the relative clause “all of which may be bad for health” and the contrast introduced by “although.” Most of the information remains understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. In “Added sugar is heavily presence in snack,” the sentence needs a suitable verb pattern, such as “is heavily represented in snacks.” The phrase “the 26% of saturated fat” also has an unnecessary article, and “the lowest percentages of all three nutrients” does not agree naturally with the singular meal being described. Aim for consistently accurate sentence patterns and check articles, agreement, and noun forms while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
