IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 4.5)
Excessive use of something is always the harmful . bascially the graph shows the use of some nutrient taht are used in the meal. bascially the graph shows that the 14 percent of sodium must be used in the snaks because the snacks also contains the sodiunm and it is very useful if we take 14percent from the snaks . if we took the more than 14 percent sodium from from the snacks then it affect the body of a man and the body contains the high amount of saodium and it will always affect the body and cause harmfull effects.in the the brakfast we have to took the14 percent sodium for the healthy body and in the lunch we have to take the 29 percent of sodium and we have to took the 43 percent of sodium in the dinner . they follow the rules so that our body got the sodium according to the need. It should not be in excessive
amount so that it affects the body bones and other system in the body like the like the digestive system.
The second chart shows the saturated fats that are necessary for the body .it states that in the snacks we shold git the 21 percent fats . they should eat that things in the breakfast that contains teh total 16 percent of the fats and in the lunch we should get 26 percent fats that are necessary for the body.and we should also took the 37 percent of the satuared fats in the dinner so that we stay healthy life . This is the sequence ot shows the necessary saturated fats.
The third chart is used to show the average percentage of sugar . It states that in the breakfast the average use of sugar in the breakfast was 16 percent and the average use of sugar in the lunch is 19 percent and the average use of the sugarin the dinner is 23 percent. In the snacks . the average use of the added sugar is 42 percent . these are the figures thats are mentioned in the in these three garps.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You report many of the chart figures accurately, including sodium at dinner (43%) and added sugar in snacks (42%), and you cover all three nutrients. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because it does not provide a clear overview of the main patterns or compare the meal categories. Instead, it repeatedly gives advice about what people “have to” eat and makes unsupported claims about health effects and required amounts. The charts show average shares in typical meals, not recommended portions or rules for a healthy diet. For a stronger response, summarise the key contrasts—for example, dinner is highest for sodium and saturated fat, while snacks are highest for added sugar—and report the figures neutrally.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure: it discusses sodium, saturated fats and sugar in separate sections, so readers can identify which chart is being described. Some sequencing is also clear, such as moving through breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. However, there is no overall progression from an overview to the most important comparisons, and ideas within paragraphs are often repetitive. Phrases such as “basically the graph shows” and repeated statements about what people “have to” take do not help connect the data. The final sentence merely refers back to the figures. Organise the response around the main patterns, use concise comparisons between meals, and make paragraph links purposeful rather than repeating the same framing.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
Your vocabulary is sufficient to identify the three nutrients and meal categories, and terms such as “sodium,” “saturated fats” and “average percentage” are relevant to the charts. However, the range is basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling errors and imprecise or unsuitable expressions that can strain the reader. For instance, “snaks,” “sodiunm,” “harmfull” and “garps” obscure otherwise understandable points, while “necessary fats” and “we have to take” incorrectly suggest dietary recommendations. Use accurate chart-reporting language and check spelling carefully. More precise verbs such as “accounts for” or “represents” would help describe proportions without implying that the figures prescribe what people should eat.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt some longer sentences and use basic linking structures, but grammatical control is weak and errors occur frequently, sometimes making relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “if we took the more than 14 percent,” “in the breakfast we have to took,” and “so that our body got the sodium,” where verb forms and sentence construction are faulty. Articles, agreement and punctuation are also inconsistent, as in “the harmful” and the run-on sentence ending “harmfull effects.in the the brakfast.” Most sentences rely on simple repeated patterns rather than a controlled range. Practise accurate present-tense descriptions of chart data, and separate each comparison into a complete, correctly punctuated sentence.
