IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts illustrate the average percentages of three different nutrients including sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in meals in the USA and these nutrients are said to be unhealthy when they are consumed more than usual.
Overall, the consumption of all three nutrients are highest in the time of dinner, in which foods are mostly sodium enriched and parcentage of suger is comparetively low. In contrast, sugar is mostly found in snacks. The percentage of saturated fat is highest in dinner and lowest in breakfast.
To begin with, in the time of breakfast, the meals contain 14% of sodium, 16% of saturated fat and added suger which means the percentage of these nutrients are lower in breakfasts. On the other hand, people in the USA consumed 43% sodium, 37% saturated fat and 23% added sugar in their dinner on average.
Regarding the remaining information, in lunch time 29% of sodium is consumed. The percentage of saturated fat in lunch time is just 3% less (26%) than sodium and added sugar account for only 19%. Additionally, foods addressed as snacks contained maximum amount of sugar (42%), minimum amount of sodium (14%) and 21% of saturated fat.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address the task with a clear overview and report the main contrasts accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks account for the most added sugar. The figures you give for lunch, dinner and snacks match the chart. Your overview also notes that breakfast values are relatively low. One detail needs correction: breakfast contains 14% sodium, 16% saturated fat and 16% added sugar, but the sentence says “16% of saturated fat and added suger,” leaving the added-sugar figure unstated. Also, describing dinner’s sugar share as “comparatively low” is broadly true, but it would be more precise to compare it directly with the snack figure. More explicit comparisons across meals would strengthen an already relevant and well-supported summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised effectively into an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. The progression from the overall pattern to breakfast and dinner, then lunch and snacks, is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “To begin with,” and “Regarding the remaining information” help signal this structure, and the reader can readily locate the figures for each meal. Some connections are less natural or precise: “On the other hand” does not express a strong contrast between breakfast and dinner, and “Regarding the remaining information” is a somewhat mechanical transition. The overview also repeats the point that dinner is highest for saturated fat. Use more purposeful comparisons and vary transitions so cohesion feels flexible rather than formulaic.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic vocabulary to describe the chart, including “average percentages,” “consumed,” “account for,” and “maximum amount.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “in the time of dinner,” “sodium enriched,” and “foods addressed as snacks” do not sound natural in this context. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “parcentage,” “suger,” and “comparetively.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding the data, but they reduce the accuracy and control expected in a chart summary. Prefer straightforward, precise expressions such as “at dinner,” “the share of sodium,” and “snacks contained.” Proofreading spelling and choosing natural collocations would make the vocabulary more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “in which foods are mostly sodium enriched” and a subordinate clause beginning “which means.” Most relationships between the figures remain understandable, and the response has a clear sentence structure overall. Some grammatical errors persist, however. In “the consumption of all three nutrients are highest,” the singular subject requires “is”; similarly, “the percentage of these nutrients are lower” has a singular subject. The phrase “in lunch time” also shows an inaccurate preposition pattern, and the breakfast sentence is structurally unclear because “which means” does not connect smoothly to the preceding list. Check subject–verb agreement and build comparisons in complete, direct sentences to improve accuracy.
