IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA

IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts provided information about the proportion of three meals of three different categories of sustenance swallowed in the USA.

Overall, the most noticeable feature is that the largest amount of sodium is used in dinner, while the least amount of sodium is used in snack and breakfast; however, the few amount of added sugars is used in dinner and greater amount of added sugar used in snack.

In terms of the proportion of sodium is used in dinner 43% and the sodium is used in snack and breakfast approximately same as 14%, while in lunch used 29%. On the other hand, the proportion of saturated fat is used in dinner 37% and the figure for luch was considerably higher than that for breakfast, at 26% and 16% respectively.

Turning to the remaining figures, the proportion of added sugar is used in snack 42%, while the figure for dinner was considerably greater than that for breakfast, at 23% and 16% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main contrast accurately: sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner, while added sugar is highest in snacks. The overview also notes that sodium is lowest at breakfast and snacks, and the body includes several relevant figures, such as sodium at 43% for dinner and saturated fat at 37%. However, coverage is uneven: the added-sugar comparison omits lunch at 19%, and the saturated-fat figures for lunch and breakfast are given without the snack value of 21%. Some descriptions are also unclear, particularly “the few amount of added sugars is used in dinner.” To strengthen the report, summarise all three patterns more precisely and compare the meal categories consistently, while keeping the overview focused on the most important contrasts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting details. The progression from sodium to saturated fat and then added sugar is easy to follow, and phrases such as “On the other hand” and “Turning to the remaining figures” help signal shifts. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, several links feel mechanical, and the repeated pattern “the proportion … is used” makes the report less smooth. The final paragraph is also brief and does not develop the added-sugar data as fully as the earlier figures. Use more varied sentence patterns and connect comparisons directly, rather than relying on repeated transition phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “categories,” and “considerably higher,” and the reader can generally understand the intended comparisons. However, word choice and collocation are often unnatural or imprecise. “Sustenance swallowed” is an unsuitable way to describe nutrients in meals, while “the proportion of sodium is used” does not express the chart’s meaning naturally. There are also spelling errors, including “luch,” and awkward phrases such as “the few amount.” These issues make the vocabulary feel limited and sometimes require the reader to interpret your meaning. Aim for precise chart language such as “accounts for,” “the share of,” and “the highest proportion,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a comparison using “higher than.” The main figures and comparisons remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “In terms of the proportion of sodium is used in dinner 43%” lacks a clear sentence structure, and “in lunch used 29%” is missing a grammatical subject. The overview’s “the few amount … is used” also has problems with determiner choice and sentence construction. These errors show that complex forms are not yet consistently controlled. Build sentences around a clear subject and verb—for example, “Dinner accounts for 43% of sodium intake”—and check articles, agreement, and clause structure.
