IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The three type of charts illustrates the average percentages in different meals of various types of nutrients, such as sodium, saturated fat and added sugar, if we want to consume too much that it might be unhealthy for us.
Overall, The image described the ratios of sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in the picture. Now firslty i am discussing about the sodium in the pie chart biggest sodium ratio 43% in dinner time that we consumed. However, snack and break fast just 14% as well as lunch 29% sodium used in the chart.
Secondly, saturated fat the highest ratios 37% in dinner, lunch 26%, snack 21% and after that break fast 16%v which is the lowest ratio in the saturated chart.
Thirdly, in the added sugar chart lowest percentage in the chart break fast16%,lunch 19%, dinner 23% and after the snack 42% ratio which is highest one the chart.
Now if we comparison the whole chart we understand that all percentages ups and down in different maners, no one stable in one place. But break fast in the saturated and sugar chart 16% ratio is same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You report the main figures accurately: dinner is highest for sodium (43%) and saturated fat (37%), while snacks lead for added sugar (42%). You also identify the shared 16% breakfast figures for saturated fat and sugar. However, the overview is vague: “all percentages ups and down” does not clearly summarise the main pattern that dinner accounts for the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, whereas snacks account for the largest share of added sugar. The opening repeats the task rather than introducing the chart clearly, and the final comparison is limited. To strengthen the response, give a concise overview of these contrasting peaks and compare the meal patterns directly, rather than listing each chart separately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic structure, with an introduction, separate sections signalled by “Overall,” “Secondly,” and “Thirdly,” and a final comparison. This makes the three nutrient categories identifiable. However, progression is mechanical and the overview does not function effectively as a summary; “Now firstly” and “Now if we comparison” also make the links between ideas awkward. The final paragraph repeats that the figures vary without explaining the most important contrast. Organise the body around the key patterns—for example, dinner’s prominence for sodium and saturated fat, then the snack peak for sugar—and use clear comparisons to connect the data. This would create a more coherent progression rather than a sequence of chart-by-chart notes.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentages,” “highest,” “lowest,” and “ratio,” and the reader can generally understand which meal and nutrient you mean. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “the biggest sodium ratio,” “sodium used in the chart,” and “all percentages ups and down.” Repeated use of “chart” and “ratio” also makes the description less precise. Spelling and word-form errors, including “firslty,” “break fast,” and “maners,” further reduce control. Build a more accurate set of reporting expressions, such as “accounted for,” “share,” and “proportion,” and check spelling and collocations. For example, say that dinner “accounted for 43% of sodium intake.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates the basic figures, but grammatical control is inconsistent and sentence structures are mostly simple or incomplete. The opening has agreement and article problems in “The three type of charts illustrates,” while “if we want to consume too much that it might be unhealthy” is an awkward, faulty clause. Several data statements lack a complete grammatical structure, for example, “Secondly, saturated fat the highest ratios 37% in dinner.” There are also errors in comparison forms and punctuation, as in “Now if we comparison the whole chart.” Use complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “Dinner accounts for the highest proportion of sodium, at 43%.” Practising accurate comparative clauses and checking sentence boundaries would make the information easier to follow.
