IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar charts compare the average proportions of sodium, saturated fats and added sugar in four different types of meals in the USA.
Overall,it is clearly seen that dinner consumption the most in all types of nutrients. In sodium and saturated fat, lunch ranks at second while in added sugar snacks take that position. In all types of nutrients, breakfast stands at least proportion.
In sodium and saturated fat, dinner accounted for 43% and 37% which is highest percentage in both nutrients followed by lunch at 29 and 26 percent, respectively. While the snack and breakfast consumed the same proportion of sodium that is 14% in case of sodium, but in saturated fat ,16% consumed by breakfast which is least of all and 21 percent by snacks
Added sugar shows a completely different pattern. In this case, most of the nutrients are consumed by snacks which is 42% followed by lunch at 23 percent.19% of added sugar is present in meal which is taken at lunch while breakfast consumed the least proportion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern that dinner accounts for the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar, and you include several relevant figures. This gives the response a clear overview and addresses the chart. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: breakfast is not the smallest category for every nutrient, since snacks and breakfast both have 14% of sodium, and the added-sugar figures are misreported. Lunch is 19%, not 23%; 23% belongs to dinner. The statement that lunch ranks second for added sugar is also incorrect, as dinner is second. More precise comparisons and a careful check of each figure would make the report more complete and reliable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of sodium/saturated fat and added sugar. This helps the reader follow the main comparisons, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “followed by,” and “In this case” show an attempt to connect information. However, progression is weakened by unclear or contradictory statements, particularly the claim that snacks are second for added sugar and the later reference to lunch at 23%. Some transitions are also awkward, such as “While the snack and breakfast consumed the same proportion,” which leaves the sentence incomplete in structure. Use clearer sentence boundaries and ensure each paragraph develops one accurate comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a sufficient range of chart-reporting vocabulary, including “average proportions,” “accounted for,” “followed by,” and “pattern.” These choices generally communicate the data, and the response attempts some variation rather than repeating one reporting verb throughout. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “dinner consumption the most,” “breakfast stands at least proportion,” and “most of the nutrients are consumed by snacks.” Nutrients are not themselves consumed in these percentages; the chart shows their shares in meals. There are also spacing and punctuation issues around commas, which affect presentation. Aim for accurate collocations such as “the proportion of sodium in dinner” and “the lowest share.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex forms, including the overview sentence beginning “Overall” and the comparison structure “followed by lunch.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but some grammatical errors remain and occasionally make relationships unclear. For example, “dinner consumption the most” lacks a verb, while “breakfast stands at least proportion” has an incomplete and incorrectly formed comparison. The sentence beginning “While the snack and breakfast…” is also not properly connected to a main clause. There are errors with articles, sentence structure, and punctuation, including missing spaces after commas. Build complete clauses first, then add comparisons using forms such as “Dinner accounted for the highest share, at 43%.”
