Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA

IELTS Writing

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The charts demonstrate the average percentage of three different types of nutrients in typical meals consumed in USA.

Although, the charts illustrate the three types of nutrients include sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in typical meals which people normally consume everyday, but all of them seems to be unhealthy if taken in excess amount than normal.

As in the first chart, it shows that sodium is being used in a certain percentage of 14%, 14%, 29% and 43% in snacks, breakfast, lunch and dinner respectively. While on the other hand, saturated fats are being consumed with the percentage of 21%, 16%, 26% and 37% in snacks, breakfast, luch and dinner respectively. Last but not the least, added sugar means the extra sugar than normal is being taken by the people with the percentage of 42%, 16%, 19% and 23% in snacks, breakfast, luch and dinner respectively.

Actually, these nutrients are proved to be good if taken in normal amount, but if the excess of them will be used then they will proved to be very harmful for the health.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify all three nutrients and report the meal percentages accurately, including the key figures for dinner and snacks. However, the response mainly lists values rather than selecting and comparing the main features. It does not clearly state the overall patterns: sodium and saturated fat peak at dinner, whereas added sugar is highest in snacks. The opening also repeats the prompt’s health warning, and the final comment about nutrients being beneficial or harmful does not summarise the chart data. To strengthen the report, give a concise overview of the contrasting peaks, then compare the meal categories and use selected figures to support those comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence: an introduction, a description of each nutrient, and a concluding comment. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “on the other hand” and “last but not the least” attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is limited because the body presents three similar lists rather than grouping or comparing the data. The linking phrases are sometimes awkward or unnecessary, and “Although” at the start of the second sentence is not followed by a contrasting main clause. Use separate, purposeful paragraphs and organise the figures around shared patterns—for example, dinner’s high sodium and saturated-fat shares versus the snack peak for sugar.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “sodium,” “saturated fat,” and “added sugar,” so the subject is generally clear. There are also attempts to vary expression, such as “consumed” and “taken in excess.” However, several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, including “being used in a certain percentage,” “extra sugar than normal,” and “the excess of them will be used.” “Charts” is also used although the visual presents pie charts, and “luch” is misspelled twice. Aim for concise, conventional reporting language such as “accounted for,” “the proportion of,” and “was highest in,” while avoiding explanations that are not shown by the data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer structures, including the sentence beginning “Although” and the repeated clauses describing each nutrient. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and the range of sentence patterns remains limited. “Although” is incorrectly paired with “but,” while “all of them seems” has a subject–verb agreement error. In the final sentence, “if the excess of them will be used” and “they will proved” show problems with conditional structure and verb form. Articles and phrasing also need attention in “consumed in USA.” Prefer clear, controlled sentences: for example, “Sodium accounted for 43% of dinner intake, compared with 14% at breakfast and in snacks.”
