IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The pie charts provide information about average proportion of three types of nutrients namely sodium, saturated fat and added sugar in typical meals in the USA, and it will harmful, if consumed in higher amount.
Overall, sodium and saturated fats is mostly taken by dinners, while the ratio of saturated fats is much lower for these. Most of the added sugars are consumed by the snacks.
Looking at the details, most of the sodium is consumed by dinners accounting for 43%, while lunch contains 29%. Snacks and breakfast have same amount of sodium at 14%. In contrast, large amount pf saturated fats are consumed by US citizens in dinners at 37%, while snacks accounting for 21%, lunch 26% and breakfast represents 16%.
Furthermore, US people take lot of sugars while eating snacks at 42%, and 23% in dinner. Moreover, lunch and breakfast represent almost the same ratio of added sugars at 19% and 16% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main patterns accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks account for the largest proportion of added sugar. The overview is clear, and the body supports it with relevant figures, including 43% sodium at dinner, 37% saturated fat at dinner and 42% added sugar in snacks. Comparisons across meals are also included, so the key features of the charts are addressed. However, the overview contains an unclear comparison in “the ratio of saturated fats is much lower for these,” which does not specify what is lower or what “these” refers to. A more precise summary of the contrast between the nutrient patterns would make the main features more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview and then to details about the nutrients. Information is generally sequenced logically, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Furthermore” help signal relationships between points. The figures are grouped sensibly, with sodium and saturated fat discussed before added sugar. Some connections are less smooth, however: “while the ratio of saturated fats is much lower for these” is difficult to follow, and “Moreover” introduces the final comparison without adding a particularly distinct point. Clarifying references and using transitions that express the exact comparison would make the progression more consistently easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing charts, including “accounting for,” “in contrast,” “consumed,” and “represent.” These choices allow you to report proportions and compare meals, and the meaning is generally clear. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “average proportion,” “it will harmful,” “large amount pf saturated fats,” and “US people take lot of sugars.” The repeated use of “consumed” and “ratio” also limits precision, particularly when describing percentages. Aim for natural chart language such as “the proportion of,” “accounted for,” and “Americans consumed,” while checking spelling and article use in phrases such as “a large amount.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex structures, including clauses with “while” and “whereas”-type contrasts, and several sentences communicate the data clearly. However, some grammatical errors remain across the response. In the introduction, “it will harmful” is missing the verb “be,” while “sodium and saturated fats is” has a subject–verb agreement error. The phrase “while snacks accounting for 21%” is not a complete parallel clause, and “lunch 26%” needs a verb or clearer grammatical connection. Articles and plural forms also need attention, as in “in higher amount.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but more consistent control of agreement, clause structure and articles is needed.
