IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The three pie charts illustrated the average prpporation of three unhealthy nutrients sodium ,saturated fats and added sugars in four different daily meals consumed in the USA . Overall dinner is the primary source for both sodium and saturated fats wherase snacks acount was highest for added sugar in a americans daily meal.In contrast breakfast contains lower consumption of all three nutrients. Looking cclosely at consumption of sodium and saturted fat they hsve almost similar percentages .In both chart dinner have the highest share of daily intake of nutrients. So on there is small propotion diffrence in lunch intake which is 29% of sodium and 26% of saturated fat. There is breackfast who contains exact same low proportion for both 14% for sodium and 16% for saturated fat.while snack intake higher of staurated fat and by comparison of sodium which is 14%. The distribution of added sugar follow a entirely different trend.Snacks are dominated in this category ,responsible for 42% of daily intake.Dinnner is second largest of nutrients comtains which is 23% mostly similar to sodium and saturated fat intake in dinner. In breakfast he sugar intake was 19% ang the lowest added sugar was taken in breakfast.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the largest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. You also include relevant comparisons, such as sodium and saturated fat at lunch (29% and 26%) and the 42% snack figure for sugar. This gives the report a clear overview and addresses the charts. However, some details are unclear or inaccurate: breakfast is not the lowest meal for all three nutrients, since snacks and breakfast both have 14% sodium, and added sugar is lowest at breakfast at 16%, not 19%. The statement that breakfast has 19% sugar conflicts with the chart. Develop the comparisons more carefully and check each figure against the visual to make the account more complete and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction and overview are followed by a paragraph comparing sodium with saturated fat and one on added sugar. This overall arrangement helps the reader follow the main categories. Some linking is effective, including “In contrast” and “Looking closely,” but connections are occasionally awkward or unclear. For example, “So on there is small proportion difference” does not clearly explain the comparison, and the final sentence repeats the breakfast point while contradicting the earlier figure. Several ideas are crowded into long sentences, with punctuation that makes boundaries difficult to see. Use clearer sentence divisions and more precise references to the meal and nutrient being discussed; this would make the progression smoother and cohesion less mechanical.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “average,” “share,” “daily intake,” “proportion,” and “distribution,” and you attempt to vary how the figures are described. However, inaccurate spelling and word choice are frequent enough to reduce clarity: examples include “prpporation,” “acount,” “saturted,” and “comtains.” Some combinations are also unnatural, such as “snacks are dominated in this category” and “the primary source for both sodium and saturated fats.” Choose standard reporting expressions and check spelling carefully. For instance, say that snacks “account for” the largest share of added sugar, and that dinner “has the highest proportions” of sodium and saturated fat. More accurate collocations would make your otherwise relevant vocabulary more effective.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including a contrast in the overview and a comparison between lunch figures. However, grammatical control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “dinner have the highest share,” where the subject and verb do not agree, and “In breakfast he sugar intake was 19%,” where the sentence structure and article use are faulty. The opening also lacks clear sentence punctuation, while several clauses run together, as in the long comparison paragraph. Practise forming complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, checking agreement and articles, and using full stops to separate comparisons. This will improve accuracy without requiring more complex structures.
