IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the average percentages in typical meals of three types of nutrients, all of which may be unhealthy if eaten too much.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average percentages of sodium, saturated fats and added sugars in typical meals consumed in the USA
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given pie charts illustrate the average proportion of sodium, saturated fat, and added sugar in breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner. All of these nutrients may be disadvantageous if consumed heavily.
Overall, sodium and saturated fat is more pervasive in dinner followed by lunch, while added sugar is more common in snack.
In breakfast, sodium represented the proportion of 14%, whereas both saturated fat and added suagr have the equal percentage of 16%. Subsequently, sodium accounted for 29% in lunch, while saturated fat has the proportion of 26%. Added sugar comprised of 19% in lunch.
In snack, added sugar has the dominant percentage of 42% followed by the saturated fat which represents 21%. Sodium has the minor proportion of 14% in snack. Dinner has a significant amount of sodium that 43% followed by saturated fat that is 37%, whereas added sugar has minor proportion of 23% in dinner.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: dinner has the highest shares of sodium and saturated fat, while snacks lead for added sugar. The figures you report are also consistent with the chart, including the 43% sodium share at dinner and 42% added sugar in snacks. You cover all four meal types and make relevant comparisons, but the overview is brief and the body mostly lists figures rather than drawing out contrasts—for example, the relatively even distribution of added sugar across breakfast, lunch and dinner could be highlighted against its snack peak. The response is also two words below the required minimum. Develop the overview and comparisons slightly further to make the key features more fully reported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction and overview are followed by details about breakfast and lunch, then snacks and dinner. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “whereas” and “followed by” help signal comparisons. The organisation is coherent, but some transitions feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “In…” and “Subsequently,” and the final paragraph moves from snacks to dinner without a clear reason for that order. To strengthen progression, group the meal comparisons more deliberately and use a wider range of natural links, while keeping the overview distinct from the detailed figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of chart-reporting vocabulary, including “represented,” “accounted for,” “dominant” and “proportion,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “more pervasive” does not fit these percentages, “disadvantageous” is an awkward substitute for unhealthy, and “comprised of” is not the correct construction for a share. There is also a spelling error in “suagr.” These slips make the wording less precise and natural, despite the relevant vocabulary range. Prefer standard collocations such as “accounted for the largest share” and “made up,” and check spelling and word choice during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, and most of the data remains understandable. Some grammatical errors are noticeable, especially subject–verb agreement and sentence construction: “sodium and saturated fat is” should use a plural verb, while “dinner has a significant amount of sodium that 43%” needs a clearer structure, such as “sodium accounted for 43% at dinner.” The phrase “saturated fat has the proportion of 26%” also shows inconsistent tense and an awkward grammatical pattern. Use past-tense reporting consistently and build comparisons with complete, parallel clauses. These corrections would improve accuracy without requiring more complicated sentence structures.
