IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Multiple individuals have made a decision to reduce the number of flight or not to travel at all. I strongly believe that this has far more long-term ecological advantages than disadvantages as is reduces carbon emissions and pollution.
Although taking flights to different countries is easier and convenient. It is necessary for some global organizations to have face to face meetings and travelling less could reduce trade and generate less revenue through international travels. Similarly, people travel for relaxing and spending leisure time with family and friends and some also travel for earning a living. Tourism is also a major gain to the economy which would reduce by reducing flights and a economy of a country is directly dependent on it.
But reducing flights or not travelling at all proves to be extremely beneficial for the environment as reducing flights also reduces carbon emissions. One of the major concerns today is declining quality of water and air. Reduction in the use of aeroplanes also directly reduces pollution by less fuel usage. However, the issue of travelling for business purposes can be resolved by video call conferences. People who travel for exploration can explore their own country and its history which would benefit themselves and the environment by increasing tourism to their own country and also reducing the number of flights taken by them.
In conclusion, reducing flights reduces the carbon emissions and pollution which have long term environmental benefits by protecting the environment by less fuel usage and improving the ecological conditions for living a healthy life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you believe the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages, and you address effects on both businesses and individuals. You identify possible economic costs, including reduced trade, revenue and tourism, then explain that video conferences and domestic travel could lessen these drawbacks. This covers the main parts of the question and gives relevant reasons. However, some points are asserted rather than developed: for example, the claim that a country’s economy depends directly on tourism needs explanation or an example, and the environmental benefits could be supported with more specific evidence. The response shows some development beyond a basic answer, but fuller explanation and more precise support would make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction to disadvantages, environmental benefits and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps distinguish the opposing considerations from your main argument, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “Similarly,” “But” and “In conclusion” guide the reader. The overall progression is understandable, though some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence of the second paragraph is a fragment, and the shift from business travel to tourism and then personal leisure is abrupt. In the final body paragraph, the ideas about pollution, video calls and domestic exploration would benefit from clearer sequencing. Use linking phrases to show relationships between specific points, rather than relying mainly on broad transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “carbon emissions,” “international travels,” “tourism,” “pollution” and “ecological conditions.” These terms make the subject clear, and phrases such as “face to face meetings” and “video call conferences” show attempts to express relevant concepts. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, however: “number of flight,” “a major gain to the economy” and “reducing flights” could be expressed more naturally and precisely. “Pollution” and “environment” recur without much variation, while “exploration” is not quite the right term for ordinary leisure travel. More precise collocations and a wider range of environmental and economic vocabulary would improve flexibility and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “which would benefit themselves and the environment” and a contrast introduced by “Although.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. “Although taking flights to different countries is easier and convenient” is an incomplete sentence, and “as is reduces” has an incorrect verb form. There are also agreement and article errors in “a economy,” “a major gain … which would reduce,” and “the number of flight.” The final sentence repeats “reduces” and has an awkwardly constructed ending. Check sentence completeness, subject–verb agreement, articles and plural forms, then proofread longer sentences for clear grammatical structure.
