IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The prompt argues that some people have decide that they will reduce the number of time they fly every year or they will stop flying at all .Although it is true that traveling in an aeroplane is one of the reasons of enviornment pollution , but by not finding alternative solution this action can create far more demage in our ecomnomy and business.

First of all, there is no doubt that traveling with aeroplane causes many harmful effect on the nature. For example, the sonic sound of the plane often create disturbance to birds and their root to the migration.Secondly, the jet gas that is relaeased by the air have toxic elements like carbon mono -oxide , carbon di-oxide etc.Their large emission can imbalance the atmosphere making the air more polluted. So, less flying on air can be taken as solution to this prblem.

However, many researchers argues that by removing aeroplane or flying less on air can not be considered ultimate solution because if people stop traveling by air they had to take another transport route such as by bus or train which will create more pressure on the land transmission sytem creating huge traffic jam and pollution problem will be not removed as those vehicles also emit toxic gas in nature. Also , it will consume time more and create demage more to business. So ultimatly we have to work

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You address both the environmental effects of flying and possible disadvantages, including pressure on other transport and harm to business. However, the response does not clearly answer whether the environmental benefits outweigh those disadvantages: the opening suggests the economic harm may be greater, but the conclusion is unfinished (“So ultimatly we have to work”), leaving your final position unclear. Several points are also asserted rather than explained—for example, the claim that buses or trains would create more pollution is not supported with a comparison or example. The response is 19 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to develop the argument. State your position directly and support each main point with a specific explanation or example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic paragraph structure: the first body paragraph discusses environmental harm, while the next introduces disadvantages of reducing air travel. Linking expressions such as “First of all,” “Secondly,” and “However” help signal these shifts. However, progression is weakened by the abrupt ending and by ideas that are joined without clear relationships, particularly the long sentence beginning “However, many researchers argues…”. Some connections are also difficult to follow, such as the move from alternative transport to business damage. Use shorter, more clearly organised sentences, and make each paragraph develop one central point before linking it to the next. A complete concluding paragraph would make the overall argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “migration,” “emission,” “atmosphere,” and “traffic jam,” which helps communicate the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “sonic sound,” “jet gas,” “land transmission system,” and “damage more to business.” Spelling errors—including “enviornment,” “rel aeased” (written as “relaeased”), and “ecomnomy”—also make the writing less clear and reduce control. Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “aircraft noise,” “exhaust emissions,” and “ground transport network.” Checking spelling and choosing established collocations would make your argument easier to understand.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a contrast introduced by “Although” and a conditional idea about what people might do if they stopped flying. However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to process. For example, “some people have decide” has an incorrect verb form, “many researchers argues” has subject–verb disagreement, and “if people stop traveling by air they had to take” shifts tense inconsistently. The opening also combines “Although” with “but,” creating an incorrect structure. Work on verb agreement and tense consistency, and avoid joining too many clauses in one sentence. Accurate shorter sentences will help you express the argument more clearly.
