Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some individuals have chosen to restrict the number of times they fly annually or even to stop flying at all. In my opinion, although it may benefit the environment on a small scale, the individuals and businesses will definitely loose opportunities worldwide.

There are some individuals who have decided to be less frequent flyers on an annual basis, which may benefit the environment in the long run. This is because those people have initiated a change to reduce the air pollution caused by the flights on a daily basis. There is a possibility that this initiative may inspire other people as well to join this movement who are concerned about the present situation of the air quality. For example, sometimes a small step taken by a few individuals could result in a trend especially on social media. However, this could take forever to have a real impact on the environment.

The people who have chosen to stop flying may loose opportunities on a global level. To expound, because of this decision, they are no longer be able to secure educational and employment opportunities in foreign countries, as people cannot travel to majority of the foreign nations without a flight. As a result, there are only a few options left, either people have to leave their home country or those opportunities. Additionally, along with individuals, the airline businesses will also suffer as less flyer means less revenue, whereas the cost of flying an airplane remains unchanged. For instance, an airplane consumes same amount of fuel with fewer people or with full capacity.

In conclusion, in my opinion, the impact on the environment may take years, but for the individuals and businesses, there will be an immediate impact. Hence, the disadvantages for the concerned groups outweigh the advantages for the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both the environmental benefits and the disadvantages for individuals and businesses. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the environmental impact is quite brief, and the point about airline revenue could be more deeply explored with more specific economic reasoning. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with more detailed explanations or concrete examples beyond the general statements provided.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To expound', 'Additionally', and 'As a result' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the argument. To improve, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more naturally integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'annually', 'initiated', and 'revenue'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'loose' instead of 'lose' and 'less flyer' instead of 'fewer flyers'. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on mastering common collocations and ensuring accurate spelling of frequently used words. Incorporating more precise, topic-specific vocabulary would also enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'they are no longer be able to' (should be 'they are no longer able to') and 'airplane consumes same amount' (missing article 'the'). Additionally, there are issues with subject-verb agreement and pluralization, such as 'less flyer means'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help improve your score in this criterion.
