IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

A group of people made a decision to lower their flying year on year or to put a full stop on travelling through air. In my opinion, the environmental benefits of this combined decision can surpass any downsides affected to the individuals and businesses.

Travelling through air causes a lot of damage to nature i.e., use of natural sources of fuels, the air and noise pollution which has a negative impact on the living. A lot of fuel can be saved as well as the money. Additionally, building an airport has led to deforestation in a lot of areas. As the demand for this transportation facility increased more and more airports are required. For instance, if the rate of flying decreases it can improve the air quality, reduce climate damage and deforestation.

Flying less might not have a major impact on people and their business. Today we have all the necessary sources available which provide an opportunity to work from any part of the world despite not being remotely or physically present there. Moreover, technology has made life very easy. You can Skype anyone from your bedroom. This not only makes the work life easier but lets us develop a work and personal life balance. For example, my friend started a freelancing project in providing advertising services for the platforms like Google advertisement in the United States. Once a month she has a virtual meeting scheduled with the client where they discuss the goals and objectives of their business.

To conclude, there are more environmental benefits that are much higher when compared to any disadvantage an individual or their business might face.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy6.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, focusing on pollution and deforestation for the environmental side, and remote work technology for the business side. However, the development is somewhat limited. While the environmental arguments are clear, the discussion regarding businesses could be more nuanced; for instance, it focuses heavily on individual remote work rather than the broader economic impact on the aviation industry or global trade. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'disadvantages' side with more depth to provide a more balanced and comprehensive argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'For instance', and 'Moreover' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, but the connection between the environmental impact of airports and the specific example of freelancing could be tighter. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two main arguments. Overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 6.5 or 7.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some topic-specific terms like 'deforestation', 'freelancing', and 'environmental benefits'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'put a full stop on travelling' and 'downsides affected to the individuals'. These choices are understandable but lack the precision and sophistication expected at higher bands. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more fluently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, which is positive. However, there are recurring grammatical slips, such as 'a group of people made a decision' (should be 'have made'), 'despite not being remotely or physically present' (awkward phrasing), and 'platforms like Google advertisement' (should be 'Google Ads'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for better control over complex structures and prepositional usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence forms while maintaining accuracy will help raise your score in this criterion.
