Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals have taken the decision to minimize their flight schedule annually or put an end to that entirely.

Going by the importance of air travel which conotes time management and comfortability, I can say that the advantages of such decisions are greater than the disadvantages and here is my opinion.

The use of aircraft in business management and other lifestyle activities is of greater benefits in the sense that time is an asset to whatever we do in life especially for those who run their businesses internationally, the time of packaging the goods and waybilling through air is of utmost priority to most business men. I have experienced one time friend of mine who is an importer of chemicals loose a big customer because of delay in the arrival of the said products, my friend made up his mind to import the goods through shipping which stayed longer days on the sea before arriving, on arrival, most of the goods have spoilt and the customer rejected them and even changed his mind about going further with the business, had it been my friend imported those goods through aircraft, it would not have stayed long before reaching the expectant customer and the goods itself would have remained intact.

So, I am of the belief that the importance of making use of flights to embark on our mission as individuals and business men can never be over emphasized as local and international trips by land or sea can delay a great deal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt but fails to balance the argument. The task asks whether environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses. You focus almost exclusively on the disadvantages of not flying (business efficiency, time management) and provide only a brief mention of the environmental context in the introduction. The environmental benefits are not discussed or developed at all. To achieve a higher band, you must provide a balanced discussion that weighs the environmental gains against the economic losses, rather than focusing solely on the latter. The position is clear, but the development of ideas is one-sided and incomplete.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraph is abrupt. While you use some cohesive devices like 'in the sense that' and 'had it been', the flow is often hindered by long, run-on sentences. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, such as 'that' in the first paragraph, which lacks a specific antecedent. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the body paragraph is repetitive, focusing on a single anecdote rather than a broader analysis of the topic.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use some informal or awkward phrasing, such as 'waybilling' and 'packaging the goods'. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'comfortability' (comfort) and 'loose' (lose). While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary related to business and logistics, the overall range is limited, and the repetition of basic words like 'goods' and 'business' restricts your ability to demonstrate a more sophisticated command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay relies heavily on long, complex sentences that are often grammatically incorrect or poorly punctuated. For example, the sentence starting with 'The use of aircraft...' is a run-on sentence that lacks proper clause separation. There are frequent errors in verb tense and agreement, such as 'the goods itself would have remained intact' (themselves). While you attempt complex structures, the lack of control over punctuation and sentence boundaries often makes the text difficult to follow. A higher band would require more frequent error-free sentences and better control over complex grammatical structures.
