Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years, growing awareness of climate change has encouraged many people to reduce air travel or avoid flying altogether. Although this trend may create certain challenges for individuals and businesses, I believe that its environmental benefits are far more significant.

One of the greatest advantages of reducing air travel is the positive impact on the environment. The aviation industry is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to global warming and climate change. Fewer flights mean lower carbon emissions, improved air quality, and reduced noise pollution around airports. Moreover, decreasing demand for air travel encourages governments and transport companies to invest in more sustainable alternatives, such as high-speed rail networks and cleaner technologies. These long-term environmental improvements benefit society as a whole.

Admittedly, flying less can have negative consequences for both individuals and businesses. People who live far from their families may find it more difficult and expensive to maintain personal relationships. Similarly, industries that rely heavily on air travel, including tourism, aviation, and international trade, may experience financial losses and reduced customer demand. Business travellers may also face longer journey times if they choose alternative forms of transport.

However, these disadvantages are relatively limited when compared with the long-term environmental gains. Many business meetings can now be conducted online through video conferencing, reducing the need for frequent flights. In addition, domestic tourism and environmentally friendly transport systems can help offset some of the economic impact on travel-related industries.

In conclusion, although reducing air travel may inconvenience some individuals and affect certain businesses, I believe that the environmental benefits, particularly the reduction in carbon emissions and the promotion of sustainable transport, clearly outweigh these drawbacks.
