Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Due to increasing concerns about environmental problems, people are choosing to fly less. These can have many environmental benefits, but at the same time can put concerns over businesses and their employees.

Recently, many reports suggest that our planet is suffering from huge a environmental crisis, increasing pollution, global warming, damages to ecosystems, increasing water levels etc. Governmental, science, Non governmental organization and business leaders have decided to solve these issues by taking practical steps.

One of the practical step is to reduce air travel. This is due to the fact that planes release high amount of Carbon dioxide "green house gas" in the air, it is the main cause of global warming. Though these efforts have a positive impact on the environmental management but pose concerns for the running businesses, especially multi-national companies, which need their high individuals to travel around the word in order to make new deals and solve any corporate level problem.

Even with these type of difficulties individuals and businesses can take advantages from modern technologies and arrange weekly meetings to insure progressive work. Business owners and corporate staff can monitor their staff via internet and use Artificial intelligence to evaluate work output.

In conclusion, even there are some disadvantages of people flying less, on the other hand has enormous environmental benefits. Decreased air travel means lower Carbon dioxide production and less impact on global warming. Consequently, this initiative is equal to a pond compared to the ocean of environmental challenges, but has a great impact on hindering the pollution and global warming issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument, acknowledging environmental benefits and the impact on businesses. However, the development is somewhat superficial. While you mention that businesses need to travel to 'make new deals,' this point is not fully extended with specific examples or deeper analysis. The conclusion is a bit repetitive and lacks a strong final synthesis of your position. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph provides a clear, well-supported argument rather than just stating the points. You have addressed all parts of the prompt, but the depth of your reasoning needs to be more consistent to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a progression of ideas from the environmental problem to the business impact and potential solutions. You use some cohesive devices like 'Due to,' 'Though,' and 'In conclusion.' However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Even with these type of difficulties.' Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the opening sentence where 'These' refers back to a concept rather than a specific noun. Improving the variety and natural flow of your linking words will help your writing feel more cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'environmental crisis,' 'ecosystems,' and 'multi-national companies.' However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'high individuals' (likely meaning 'high-level executives') and 'insure progressive work' (should be 'ensure'). The phrase 'hindering the pollution' is also slightly unnatural. To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated, topic-specific academic terms would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include 'One of the practical step' (should be 'steps'), 'high amount of Carbon dioxide' (should be 'a high amount'), and 'even there are some disadvantages' (should be 'even though there are'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with article usage and pluralization. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to limit your score in this criterion.
