Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response addresses the general topic of reducing air travel for environmental benefits, but the development of ideas is severely hindered by severe repetition and lack of clarity. The student attempts to discuss environmental benefits and disadvantages related to fear of flying and business meetings, but these points are expressed in a very repetitive and fragmented manner. Sentences such as 'some people they cannot believe in the fly' fail to construct a coherent argument or position. The task is addressed only minimally and tangentially, as ideas are not properly extended or supported, aligning closely with the descriptors for Band 4.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The organisational structure of the text is heavily impaired. Although the student attempts to use paragraph markers such as 'First of all', 'Second of all', and 'To sum up', the internal progression of ideas is absent. Sentences are disjointed, and cohesive devices are used inaccurately or repetitively, such as the excessive repetition of 'and the many people'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the paragraphs consist largely of repetitive restatements rather than logically sequenced points. Referencing and substitution are frequently faulty, making it very difficult for the reader to follow the flow of information, placing the response at Band 4.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily restricted. The student frequently misuses common words and phrases, such as 'reduce of the number', 'believe in the fly', and 'affrid' (afraid). There is no successful attempt to use less common or academic lexical items, and word choices often distort meaning or strain the reader's comprehension. Errors in word formation and collocation are pervasive throughout the response. This performance fits the Band 4.0 descriptor, where basic vocabulary and frequent errors limit precision and expression.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of poorly constructed simple and attempted complex sentences that are heavily flawed. Errors in grammar, tense usage, and article placement are constant, such as 'Some people decided to the reduce of the number' and 'some people was affrid was the fly'. There is a complete lack of error-free sentences, and basic structures are frequently mishandled. These frequent, pervasive errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and distort the meaning of the statements, corresponding to a Band 4.0 score.
