Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the disadvantages for individuals and businesses, as well as the environmental benefits of reducing or stopping air travel, ultimately taking a clear position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas presented are relevant, such as the psychological impacts on workers, corporate communication challenges, and the positive effects on air pollution. However, some arguments remain somewhat under-developed and rely on generalisations rather than deep exploration. For instance, the point about China's respiratory problems is introduced as an example but not fully integrated to strongly prove the thesis. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, fitting the Band 6 descriptor where all parts are covered with some relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs covering disadvantages and advantages respectively, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, such as 'Although', 'Moreover', and 'In addition', though referencing and logical progression are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive in structure. For example, starting multiple sentences and paragraphs with variations of 'The major disadvantages' or 'The principal advantages' highlights a somewhat formulaic approach to cohesion. Nevertheless, the progression of ideas is discernible throughout the response, justifying a solid Band 6 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'corportions', 'fumes', and 'respiratory problems'. However, there are notable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'corportions' for corporations, 'iisues' for issues, 'envionment' for environment, 'attened' for attended, and 'bussiness' for business. Additionally, some word choices and collocations lack precision, such as 'people bound to their studies' or 'stop their flying habits'. While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors are noticeable and detract from the overall polish, they rarely impede communication, aligning well with the Band 6 criteria.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating subordinating conjunctions such as 'Although', 'when', and 'because'. There are, however, several grammatical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings present, such as 'the majority of people have taken the decision of not flying' (instead of 'to not fly' or 'against flying'), 'when individuals will not travel' (instead of 'do not travel'), and 'have to cope up with' (instead of 'cope with'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors in grammar occur across the text, they do not impede the overall communication of the writer's ideas, fitting comfortably into the Band 6 band.
