Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this industrial era, the digital system has revolutionsied the way in which we live, communicate and travel. While global warming has alarmed people to reduce the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, some people have made a decision to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying completely. Although it will make it very difficult for individuals and businessmen to attend meetings on time, it will reduce the release of carbon dioxide into the air.

First of all, when less number of people use planes for travelling, it will reduce the reduce the amount of dangerous gasses which are released into the air everywhere. Nowadays, climate changes, such as floods, rainfalls in unpredicted seasons, etc, are very common, and the main reason behind all these changes is global warming. And global warming is mainly due to the release of carbon dioxide into the environment, because when people use planes and other transportation facilities, these vehicles and planes release carbon dioxide. However, by reduing the use of planes in everyday life help to control the release of carbon dioxide to some extent.

In the counter argument, it will bring harmful consequences for individuals and businessmen, and it will become a pain for them to reach in the different meetings on time. Normally, industrialists and politicians have to visit other countries for different purposes, such as national visits or attending business meetings. But in case of an urgent meeting, they need such kind of transportation facility which enable them to reach their destinations on time, so they usually prefer planes for travelling. In contrast, if they prohibit the use of planes completely or allow themselves to use planes in a limited way, it will become extremely difficult for them to manage their professional activities efficiently.

In conclusion, I am a strong proponent of the idea that people should choose to reduce the number of times they fly every year on planes. In addition, it will be a great way to make the environment neat and clean, reducing carbon dioxide, but it will create severe difficulties for bussinessmen and other professionals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the environmental benefits of reducing air travel and the disadvantages for individuals and businesses, such as difficulties attending urgent meetings. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay. The main ideas are extended and supported, though the discussion of environmental impacts relies somewhat on general statements rather than highly developed specific examples. For instance, the mention of climate changes and floods is relevant, but the elaboration could be deeper. Overall, the task is addressed adequately and meets the requirements for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, separating the introduction, environmental benefits, disadvantages, and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'First of all', 'In the counter argument', and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, and ideas progress logically from one paragraph to the next, guiding the reader smoothly through the writer's argument. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'revolutionsied', 'proponent', and 'industrialists'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'revolutionsied' (revolutionsed/revolutionised), 'reduing' (reducing), and 'bussinessmen' (businessmen). Additionally, phrasing like 'when less number of people' and 'reach in the different meetings' demonstrates inaccuracies in collocation and preposition usage. Despite these flaws, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning without heavily impeding communication, earning a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, such as 'when less number of people use planes', 'reach in the different meetings', and 'such kind of transportation facility which enable them'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. The errors do not severely impede communication, but they prevent the essay from reaching a higher band, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0.
