Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by discussing the environmental benefits and disadvantages of reducing air travel, such as lower pollution and potential job losses. However, the position is sometimes unclear, and the ideas remain quite limited and under-developed, particularly regarding the balance between individuals, businesses, and the environment. Crucially, the response falls significantly short of the required word count, containing only 207 words against the minimum of 250. This negative impact on task completion pulls the score down into the lower bands, as the arguments cannot be fully explored within this restricted length.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing a basic structural attempt with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by poor transitions and confusing paragraph organization. For instance, the second paragraph mixes the discussion of environmental benefits with a sudden, contradictory mention of businesses closing and job losses, which disrupts the flow of the argument. Furthermore, cohesive devices are basic, repetitive, or inaccurately used, such as 'On one hand' being misused to introduce conflicting points within the same section. Referencing and linking throughout the essay are often unclear, resulting in a somewhat disjointed reading experience.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently impeded by numerous spelling and word-choice errors. Examples include 'trinsportation' instead of transportation, 'air planes' instead of aeroplanes, 'fasel fules' instead of fossil fuels, 'claner' instead of cleaner, and 'coved 19' instead of Covid-19. The writer attempts some less common terms like 'environmental benefits' and 'natural resours', but the pervasive spelling mistakes and inaccurate collocations, such as 'bostively on the nature', restrict the lexical range and make it difficult for the reader to engage fully with the text, placing it firmly at the lower-intermediate level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The grammatical structures are generally very simple, featuring frequent elementary errors. The writer attempts some complex structures, but these are almost always faulty, such as 'how reduceing the numer of fiyes will effect on the environment' and 'make the weather more cooler and make rain full'. There are consistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement ('people began', 'their is both bostive'), and capitalization and punctuation throughout the text. While the core meaning can sometimes be guessed, the high frequency of errors across basic and complex sentences causes constant difficulty for the reader.
