Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of reducing or stopping air travel, taking a clear position that the drawbacks outweigh the benefits. The writer attempts to cover key areas such as business impacts, personal relationships, and environmental resource conservation. However, the development of these ideas is frequently hindered by awkward phrasing and repetition, leading to under-developed arguments. For instance, the discussion on business travel relies on vague generalisations like 'numerous businessmen are established their work with the guidance of foriegn trainers'. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, the overall depth of task response aligns with a Band 5.5 to 6.0 descriptor, and is awarded a 6.0 for presenting a relevant and identifiable position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a logical overall arrangement, utilising paragraphing to separate distinct ideas, such as business disadvantages, personal impacts, and environmental advantages. However, the progression between sentences and ideas is frequently clumsy and mechanical. Transitional phrases like 'To commence with', 'To explain it', and 'To narrate it' are used awkwardly and repetitively, which detracts from the flow. Furthermore, referencing and logical links within paragraphs are sometimes unclear, as seen in the sentence 'So, if the flights are totally banned so there would be decline in the business'. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or overused. Considering these organisational flaws alongside the attempt at paragraphing, the essay earns a Band 5.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'irrefutable fact', 'renewable resources', and 'prohibited'. However, there are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that frequently cause difficulty for the reader. Examples include 'subsantial' instead of substantial, 'foriegn' instead of foreign, 'savage' instead of saving, and phrases like 'decrease the amount of times' instead of reducing the frequency. The repetition of terms like 'to explain it', 'to expond it', and 'to narrate it' also indicates a restricted functional vocabulary. These persistent lexical inaccuracies firmly place the response at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex forms are faulty and marred by frequent grammatical errors. Issues include incorrect verb tenses, missing auxiliary verbs, awkward clause structures, and punctuation errors. Examples of significant structural errors include 'numerous businessmen are established their work', 'businessman built their work with the effective ideas', and 'People can weakened their relations'. While the meaning can generally be parsed with effort, the high frequency of grammatical mistakes means that error-free sentences are in the minority. This level of grammatical control corresponds to a Band 5.0.
