Student answer (Band 8.0)
In response to the accelerating climate crisis, a growing segment of the population has chosen to curtail their air travel or eschew flying entirely. While this trend poses notable operational and personal challenges for commercial entities and individuals alike, I firmly believe that the profound environmental advantages far eclipse these transient drawbacks.
To begin with, reducing aviation undoubtedly imposes a heavy toll on global commerce and personal connectivity. From a business perspective, multinational corporations rely heavily on international flights to conduct face-to-face negotiations, audit overseas facilities, and manage global supply chains efficiently. Virtual communication, though useful, often falls short of building the deep trust required for high-stakes enterprise. For individuals, air travel has democratized cross-border tourism and facilitated family reunification in an increasingly globalized world. Restricting this freedom could lead to a sharp decline in tourism-dependent economies and exacerbate a sense of isolation among diaspora communities who find themselves physically disconnected from loved ones.
Nevertheless, the ecological imperatives of reducing air travel are monumental and cannot be ignored. The aviation sector is currently one of the fastest-growing contributors to global greenhouse gas emissions, releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides directly into the upper atmosphere, where their warming effect is amplified. By curbing or eliminating commercial flights, humanity can achieve an immediate and substantial reduction in its collective carbon footprint. Furthermore, this shift puts necessary pressure on both governments and transport networks to accelerate the development of greener infrastructure, such as high-speed electric rail networks. Ultimately, preserving atmospheric stability is an existential necessity that safeguards the very planet upon which these businesses and individuals operate.
In conclusion, although a paradigm shift away from flying incurs undeniable economic friction for enterprises and alters the lifestyle of global citizens, the ecological dividend is vastly more critical. Since a destabilized climate poses a systemic threat to all human activity, the environmental benefits of reduced aviation indisputably outweigh the immediate disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The candidate fully addresses all parts of the task, presenting a well-developed position throughout the essay. The prompt asks whether the environmental benefits of reducing air travel outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses, and the writer takes a clear stance in the introduction ('I firmly believe that the profound environmental advantages far eclipse these transient drawbacks') and maintains this position logically to the end. Body paragraph 1 thoughtfully examines the drawbacks for commerce and personal connectivity, while body paragraph 2 outlines the monumental ecological imperatives. Ideas are well extended with relevant supporting details, such as the role of multinational corporations and greenhouse gas emissions, meeting all requirements for a high band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.5
Ideas are logically sequenced and progress naturally from introduction to opposing arguments, supporting arguments, and a definitive conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme. Cohesive devices are managed skilfully and naturally without being intrusive, as seen through effective transitional phrases like 'To begin with', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing and substitution are clear throughout the text, ensuring the reader can effortlessly follow the writer's line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 8.0
The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic context. Less common lexical items are used skilfully, including phrases such as 'accelerating climate crisis', 'eschew flying entirely', 'multinational corporations', 'diaspora communities', and 'ecological dividend'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise, with only occasional minor inaccuracies. The language conveys subtle shades of meaning effectively and contributes to a professional, academic tone that meets the criteria for a strong score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0
The response displays a wide range of complex grammatical structures used with a high degree of control. The majority of sentences are error-free, featuring sophisticated syntactic constructions such as participial phrases ('releasing vast quantities of carbon dioxide...') and conditional or concessive clauses ('although a paradigm shift...'). Punctuation is accurate, and control over tense and agreement is consistent. While there are a few very minor stylistic infelicities, they do not impede communication, placing the response comfortably within the Band 8 descriptor.
