Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years, a significant number of people have decided a new approach to reduce their number of flying every year or to use the different modes of transport. This approach can be highly beneficial as it helps to improve the air pollution and reduce the air traffic. Overall, i believe that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

In contemporary society, people loves to travel a lot to different countries to experience the culture, food and local markets. Travelling help the people to take a break from usual routine and spend some quality time with nature and their family members. Mostly they preferred foreign countries very much as compared to local destinations, and their favorite means of transport is aeroplane. Because it is very convenient and reduce their time of travelling. The people have choose the different mode of transport, because many incidents are happening over the last few years, like air crash, the flight schedule delays and climatic conditions, due to the global warming issues.

On the other hand, this trend can bring significant benefits especially in terms of environmental protection. It can reduce many different types of pollution such as air and noise. It can help to decrease the air traffic, and through this new approach it is very beneficial for the pilots, because they have to fly long hours and due to the lack of sleep the incidents may occur like air crash. Now they will get a proper sleep and airlines can also maintain their flight schedules properly. Although, with this new development, it effects the sales of airline companies and got bankrupt. The government has to provide some financial support to these companies. so that it could not completely shutdown.

In conclusion, this can be particularly beneficial for environmental conservation. Through government support the airline companies can easily sustain and they do not have to face the financial problems with this new trend. It is clear that the merits of this approach will outweigh the demerits.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both the environmental benefits and the disadvantages for individuals and businesses, presenting a clear overall position that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on individual benefits mentions travelling to experience culture and take a break, but then abruptly shifts into discussing flight delays and global warming. Similarly, the disadvantages are touched upon through airline bankruptcies and government support, but these points are underdeveloped and lack concrete examples. The writer attempts to cover all parts of the task, meeting the basic requirements for a Band 6.0 performance, but the arguments would benefit greatly from deeper elaboration and more sustained reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used, though the grouping of ideas within paragraphs is occasionally disjointed, such as mixing individual travel motivations with flight safety concerns in the second paragraph. Cohesive devices are employed, but some are faulty, mechanical, or misused, such as the abrupt transition 'Although, with this new development...' and the lowercase 'i' used for the pronoun 'I' in the introduction. Referencing is generally clear, but logical progression from sentence to sentence occasionally breaks down, resulting in a somewhat mechanical flow that fits the Band 6 descriptor well.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'environmental protection', 'climatic conditions', and 'financial support'. However, there are numerous lexical and collocational inaccuracies throughout the text, such as 'number of flying' instead of 'frequency of flying', 'people loves' instead of 'people love', and 'effects the sales' instead of 'affects the sales'. Less common lexical items are attempted, but inaccuracies in word choice and form prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. Spelling is generally acceptable, but the overall lexical control sits comfortably at a Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in grammatical structures. However, frequent grammatical errors are present throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('people loves', 'it effects'), incorrect prepositional usage ('reduce their time of travelling'), and punctuation or fragment errors like starting a sentence with 'Although, with this new development...' followed by a fragmented clause. While these errors do not severely impede communication, their frequency prevents the control from reaching a Band 7 level, aligning the response with a Band 5.5 score.
