Student answer (Band 6.0)

This issue has sparked a debate concerning its benefits and drawbacks,

while their are some advantages of reducing their flight hours or not flying at all but it also comes with significant disadvantages.

There are some benefits of reducing flight hours such as not burning fossil fuels which will eventually reduce the emission of Carbon Dioxide and also ozone layer will face less deterrence. This will ensure a much

safer environment for all of humanity.

This comes with benefits however we cannot undermine its drawbacks. We have to consider that in this era, aviation industry if one of the biggest industries in the world. Boycotting it would leave millions unemployed and would lead to significant financial losses for private and government owned airlines. This would also shatter the economy of countries who thrive through tourism as this would significantly reduce tourism throughout the world. In this modern era we live in a world where we are connected to each and every country. This could also effect the multi-national-companies as they employee people from all around the globe. It would be really hard to conduct meetings and address important issues to their employees which will eventually lead to decrease in their sales, mismanagement and various problems. Some businesses also require frequent travel to different countries to find the right product or to target the right audience, so boycotting flying will eventually lead to the suffering of businesses all over the world.

There are benefits and drawbacks of this issue but in my view, there are more disadvantages than advantages of reducing flying or stopping it altogether

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the environmental benefits and the disadvantages of reducing or stopping air travel for individuals and businesses. A clear position is established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion, arguing that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. The ideas presented, such as reduced carbon emissions and economic fallout in the aviation and tourism sectors, are relevant and extended. However, some arguments lack deeper support or specific examples, which keeps the response at a Band 6.5 level. For instance, the impact on multi-national companies is mentioned, but it is not fully illustrated with a concrete scenario.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognisable introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from environmental benefits to economic drawbacks. However, there are issues with cohesive devices and punctuation. The opening sentence contains a comma splice and a confusing transition ("while their are some advantages... but it also comes"). Paragraphing is used, but the second body paragraph is quite dense and long, grouping multiple distinct thoughts—such as tourism, multi-national companies, and product sourcing—together without sufficient internal transitions, leading to a mechanical feel in places.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like "fossil fuels," "Carbon Dioxide," "unemployed," and "multi-national-companies." There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by word choice and spelling errors, such as using "deterrence" instead of "deterioration" when referring to the ozone layer, and spelling "effect" instead of "affect" in relation to companies. Despite these inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main arguments without heavily impeding communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and relative clauses. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as the initial run-on sentence containing a homophone error ("their are" instead of "there are"), missing commas after introductory phrases, and awkward phrasing like "aviation industry if one of the biggest industries." Punctuation is also weak, particularly regarding run-on sentences and comma splices in the introduction and final paragraphs. These errors occasionally disrupt the reading flow, aligning the essay with Band 6.
