IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Recently climate advocates are widely being highlighting that individuals should minimize their annual flying hours or even stop flying at all just for the sake of our beloved land. We should take the lead and shoulder our responsibility in order to make our planet more cleaner and greener. With that being said I believe that if businesses and frequent travellers cut down their number of flights by even a fraction we can make significant changes.
Being a strong proclaimer of putting our environment first I undoubtdly believe that the advantages of this initiative would definetly outweight it's disadvantages. If big businesses and major number of individuals who take flights frequently start cutting down on their annual flights, it can bring a great relief not only for our environment but could also ease up overall airport operations as well. We can cut down on fuel utilization, reduce the CFCs, eradicate harmful emissions by substantial numbers. As result this we can eventually recover our damaged ozone layer and clean up the atmospheric air.
On the other hand some people do argue that, other ways of saying our Earth should be followed rather than only pin pointing the people who take flights. They assert that in comparision with the four wheels on roads airplanes can have lesser impact on our natural ecosystem. Individuals and service providers have also emphasized that traveling or shipping by plane is more time efficient and productive. So therefore, people shouldn't be restricted from hoping into planes just for this cause.
In conclusion, I would emphasize that in the long run environmental gains surpass the disadvantages being caused by limiting annual flying hours of individuals and businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the environmental benefits and the disadvantages for individuals and businesses, maintaining a clear position throughout. In the introduction, the writer clearly states their stance that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. Ideas are extended and supported, such as mentioning reduced fuel utilization and airport operations in the second paragraph, and addressing time efficiency and shipping in the third paragraph. However, there is a tendency to overgeneralize slightly and some ideas, particularly the counter-arguments, could be expanded further with more specific examples. Overall, the task is well addressed, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0, and leaning towards a solid Band 7.0 for clear positioning and relevant support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped into four distinct paragraphs, following a standard introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'With that being said', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, there are instances where referencing and cohesion feel somewhat mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'As result this we can eventually recover'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but the integration of cohesive ties could be smoother. These features align closely with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'climate advocates', 'shoulder our responsibility', and 'time efficient'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from precision, including 'undoubtdly', 'definitely' misspelled as 'defly'/'defnetly', 'outweight it's', 'pin pointing', 'comparision', and 'hoping' instead of 'hopping'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, fitting comfortably within the Band 6.0 criteria.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some ambition with structures like conditional sentences ('If big businesses and major number of individuals... start cutting down... it can bring'). However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as missing commas after introductory phrases ('With that being said I believe'), incorrect prepositions ('more cleaner' instead of 'cleaner'), and awkward phrasing ('stop flying at all just for the sake of our beloved land'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they persist across the text, preventing the essay from achieving a higher band score and placing it firmly at Band 6.0.
