Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals have decided to minimise the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether. This would create a huge impact on the environment. However, I believe that environmental benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages for people and buisinesses.

In this increasingly developing world, travelling via airways has become an essential part of the mankind, especially for buisinesses. These companies might face huge losses if people reduce the number of times they fly as they might lose their potential clients and relations with other companies. For instance, employees have a meeting with a client in the other part of the world in a day or two and reaching there seems impossible if travelling by other means of travel other than a plane and would waste alot of time for them, whereas, if they take a plane there, they would arrive in a few hours, finish up their meeting and return back the next day. Consequently, it would save time, partnership and a long journey.

Additionaly, if humans having stopped using airways would affect the jobs and employment oppurtunities revolving around it leaving millions of people unemployed. For example, if an airline company discontinues, the workers working under it will all be forced to find jobs elsewhere. As a result, it would affect the country's economy as the individuals might consider migrating to a different region where there are better opportunities .

However, it does have a major advantage benefitting the environment. If people stop travelling by airplane for short distances, less greenhouse gases will be produced and other ways for travel will improve their quality for people to travel comfortably. For example, high speed trains that produce less emissions will start working all over the cities making it a sustainable option. But, this issue can be solved if a sustainable alternative is found for planes consuming fossil fuels in the future.

In conclusion, the advantages of stopping travel via aeroplanes do not outweigh the disadvantages of

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position throughout, suggesting that the environmental benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages for people and businesses. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, bridging toward a higher band by offering distinct arguments regarding business operations and employment. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or simplistic, such as the brief handling of environmental solutions in the fourth paragraph where the discussion trails off into generalities. Furthermore, the response trails off incompletely at the very end ('advantages of stopping travel via aeroplanes do not outweigh the disadvantages of'), leaving the final conclusion cut off. These features reflect a performance that fully captures the middle tier of task response, successfully presenting a stance and supporting points while showing minor limitations in overall elaboration and conclusion completeness.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the argument into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing business impacts, employment, environmental advantages, and a concluding thought. Progression is visible, yet cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Additionaly' and repetitive sentence openings create a slightly rigid flow. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as ambiguous pronoun use in phrases like 'if humans having stopped using airways would affect...'. Paragraphing is present and separates main ideas, but the lack of a fully realized final paragraph disrupts the overall structural harmony. These traits place the text securely within the middle band for cohesion, showing sensible organizational efforts alongside noticeable mechanical lapses and referencing issues.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'sustainable option', 'greenhouse gases', and 'discontinues'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors and word choice inaccuracies throughout the text, including repeated misspellings of 'buisinesses' instead of 'businesses', 'oppurtunities' instead of 'opportunities', and phrasing like 'humans having stopped using airways'. While these vocabulary and spelling slips do not severely impede overall communication, they prevent the text from achieving a higher level of precision and stylistic sophistication. The lexical resource demonstrates a minimally sufficient variety to discuss the topic, paired with enough recurring errors and awkward collocations to firmly anchor it in the middle tier of lexical scoring.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting varied structures such as conditional clauses and relative clauses. There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation that occur throughout the response. Examples include awkward phrasing like 'if humans having stopped using airways would affect', faulty preposition usage in 'travelling via airways', and run-on structures in the second paragraph. Despite these errors, the grammatical structures rarely impede comprehension, allowing the reader to follow the core arguments. This blend of attempted complex structures alongside persistent non-impeding errors aligns precisely with a mid-level grammatical profile, reflecting a command of basic patterns with recurring slips in complex syntax and agreement.
