IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few individuals have choose to cut the amount of times they travel by air or to quit flying completly. In my opinion, the ecological advantages of this trend outweight the drawbacks for people and companies.

The main benfits is a significant reduction of pollution. Aviation is responsible for roughly two to three percent of global carbon output, and a single long-haul flight produce more emmission of carbon than a person in some countries generates in a year. If more travelers choose train and video calls instead, pollution would fall and the fight against climate would gain momentum. For instance, after france retricted some short domestic flights where rail alternatives exist, it showed that cutting flights is both practical and effective.

However, there are indenialble disadvantages. on a personal level, people may lose to visit different cultures and their relatives, and travel by land is time taking and expensive. Business also face many challnges. people who are sitting across the sea they didnt communicate face to face that may stuggle to build trust in company. alos airlines companis may face losses in their firms and lose jobs and revenue.

Despite these concerns, I belive the drawbacks can be managable. Technology such as video call which is already replaced many business trips, as you seen in pandemic, when countless companies continue operating their business without flying.

In conclusion, although reducing flights creates some inconvenience and economic pressure, the long-term benefits of protecting the environment far more important abd the negatives effects can be reduce through some alternatives and innovation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position from the outset that the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Relevant ideas are presented, such as pollution reduction, personal travel limitations, and business challenges. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. While the environmental benefits are explored with specific references, the disadvantages for businesses and individuals are somewhat superficial and lack deeper extension. For instance, the point regarding business trust and communication is introduced but remains under-developed. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to fully extend and support all main arguments with richer explanations and more robust examples rather than relying on brief generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to organise ideas into logical paragraphs, each with a discernible focus. Introduction and conclusion strategies are present, and the progression of the argument is generally easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. For example, cohesive devices and referencing within paragraphs show occasional awkwardness, such as abrupt transitions between sentences in the third paragraph ("on a personal level... Business also face... alos airlines companis..."). Additionally, referencing can be unclear, as seen in the phrase "people who are sitting across the sea they didnt communicate face to face". To achieve a higher standard, the writer must ensure that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and fluidly, and that paragraph transitions are managed with greater precision to guarantee seamless logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common vocabulary items such as "ecological advantages", "long-haul flight", and "momentum". However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word form that reflect limitations at this level. Instances such as "choose" instead of "chosen", "completly", "outweight", "benfits", "indenialble", "challnges", "stuggle", "alos", "belive", "managamle", and "abd" demonstrate frequent lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies. Although these errors do not severely impede overall communication, they prevent the writing from achieving greater precision and fluency. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their control of less common lexical items, improving collocation awareness, and paying closer attention to standard spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use varied structures such as conditional clauses and subordinate clauses. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. These include verb form and agreement issues such as "a single long-haul flight produce", article omissions and misuse such as "after france retricted" and "in pandemic", and awkward prepositional or clausal patterns like "people who are sitting across the sea they didnt communicate". While these errors rarely impede communication entirely, they persist frequently enough to restrict the grammatical score. To progress further, the writer needs to enhance accuracy in complex sentence patterns, maintain consistent subject-verb agreement, and refine control over articles and punctuation.
