IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In the recent times, some people have taken dicisions to either cut their number of flights per year or completely stop flying. I personally think that reducing the number of flights may have environmental benefits, however, stopping it will only pause the development of any nation. So, there needs to be a balance between the environmental benefits and the profits of individuals and businesses.
Many individuals will agree that there are several advantages to reduce the number of times for flying. For example, environmental conservationists will find it way more progressive thinking as it will decline the carbon footprints and emissions from fossil fuels to the environment. It will also save the money for travelling for the individuals and reduce the demand and cost of fuel for the authoroties.
Other people will definitely say that there are more disadvantages than advantages. With the reduce in taking international flights, the international communications between countries and businesses will be hampered. Therefore, people will not be able to explore foreign cultures and educations by travelling. Moreover, airfare businesses will also be facing downfalls due to lack of passengers. It can be seen that it is actually pausing a nation's development as a whole.
In my opinion, flying in other places and other countries is necessary as you can not develop as a nation without moving. It is better to skip unnecessary flights, like just for merely passing time, to reduce environmental footprints than fully stopping flying. Because stopping flying will also pause development of our country. So, governments should introduce some rules and regulations to use biobased fuel for reducing negative impacts over environment and we should also take actions to make the travelling more sustainable for better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout the essay. The student acknowledges both environmental benefits and disadvantages for individuals and businesses, concluding that a balanced approach is necessary. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. While the environmental advantages are reasonably well-extended, points regarding international communications and airfare businesses in the third paragraph remain somewhat general and under-developed. To reach a higher level, the writer would need to provide more specific explanations or concrete examples illustrating how the reduction in flights impacts global business operations and individual cultural exploration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear central topic introduced in the opening paragraph and followed by distinct body paragraphs discussing advantages, disadvantages, and a personal conclusion respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different facets of the prompt. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, transition phrases such as 'With the reduce in taking international flights' and repetitive structural connectors create a slightly stiff flow, and referencing is not always completely clear. To improve, the writer could employ a wider variety of more subtle cohesive devices and ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main arguments. The student attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'environmental conservationists', 'carbon footprints', and 'biobased fuel', showing some ambition. However, there are notable word choice, word form, and spelling inaccuracies that prevent a higher rating. Examples include the spelling error 'dicisions', the incorrect noun form 'With the reduce in taking', the awkward phrase 'save the money for travelling', and the misspelling 'authoroties'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in lexical selection and control over word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I personally think that reducing... however, stopping it will only pause...' and conditional reasoning. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as prepositions and articles within patterns—for instance, 'In the recent times', 'emissions from fossil fuels to the environment', 'impacts over environment', and 'travelling more sustainable'. Nevertheless, these grammatical errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To achieve a stronger grammatical profile, the writer should focus on greater accuracy with articles, prepositional usage, and ensuring that complex structures are formed cleanly without minor agreement or structural slips.
