Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is agreed by some of people that flying should either be stopped completely or individuals should take fewer flights in a year. This essay is going to cover whether the environmental advantages outweight the the disadvantages for buisnesses and normal individuals or not. I assume that there are larger benefits for the envionment then drawbracks for people in this.

Every day there are numerous of planes which fly to make people travel around the world. Reducing it can have a positive effect on the environment. For example, there is a higher consumption of fuel for planes due to the high number of flights everyday going around. This emits larger carbon emissions. Eventually, it will cause air pollution around the environment. Therefore, taking fewer flights or stopping flying for some time can give a lot benefit to our environment and we can help it stay unpolluted.

In contrast, this can make more disadvantages for other type of people such as buisnessmans. This is mainly because people related to buisness often fly to different countries to meet their clients, work on deals and project, or sometimes buisness trips. Reducing the flights can cause challenges in their work. For example, if they won't travel for their buisness purposes, they will have lesser international buisness opportunities and partners. As a result, this can negatively affect their buisnesses and eventually, they may face decline in their profit generation.

Furthermore, individuals can also have some difficulties if travel would be banned or limited. One of it's drawback is that there will be less travel opportunities for people. Additionally, it can be stressfull as people living abroad won't be able to see their families for longer period because it will be harder them to travel back. Therefore, people will have to face inconvenience without any reason.

In summary, the environmental benefits outweight the disadvantages, mainly because reducing aviation emissions would have a long term benefit for the environament, while the most individual/buisnesses disadvantages could be reduced through alternatives such as video calls or visiting home country once a year.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout that the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are generally relevant, fulfilling the criteria for the lower level, and they show elements of the higher band through extended support, particularly in the body paragraphs discussing fuel consumption and business impacts. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed; for instance, the argument regarding individuals and family separation is introduced with limited elaboration. Examples such as 'meeting their clients, work on deals and project' provide adequate support, but to reach the higher descriptor fully, all aspects of the argument would need more rigorous and fully extended exploration without over-generalisation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, and paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'Furthermore', and 'In summary' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. While referencing is generally clear, occasional mechanical transitions prevent it from achieving a more fluid and unobtrusive flow. Overall, the structural progression is well-managed, satisfying the demands of this band level through clear logical sequencing from introduction to conclusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate the central arguments. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items and phrasing, such as 'carbon emissions' and 'alternative', but encounters notable issues with word choice, word form, and spelling. There are several spelling and lexical slips throughout the text, including 'outweight', 'buisnesses', 'envionment', 'drawbracks', 'buisnessmans', and 'stressfull'. Furthermore, some collocations are slightly unnatural, such as 'make more disadvantages'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, reflecting a typical performance at this tier where vocabulary control is sufficient for basic task completion but lacks precision and stylistic flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional clauses and relative clauses, as seen in 'if they won't travel for their buisness purposes, they will have lesser international buisness opportunities'. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing present, such as 'It is agreed by some of people', 'numerous of planes', and 'harder them to travel back'. However, these errors in grammar and punctuation rarely impede communication. The writer controls basic sentence construction well enough to ensure the message is conveyed, though a limited control over articles, prepositions inside grammatical patterns, and verb tense consistency keeps the grammatical accuracy at this level.
