Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is decided by some individuals that they will fly less times a year or they will stop flying altogether. From my perspective, although the environmental benefits but the disadvantages overshadows its advantages because it will destroy the airline industry and travelling long distances will be so difficult.

On the one hand, this approach will have numorous benefits related to environment protection. First benefit is that overall air pollution will be reduced drastically as airplanes are one of the biggest cause of it. Planes consume gigantic amount of fuel in one flight. As burning of fuel increases harmful pollutants in the atmosphere, it results in different diseases such as asthama, throat infection etc. Another benefit of this approach is that it will reduce noise pollution in residential areas that are near airports. It will reduce stress, anxiety and sleeplessness that are generally found in these housing societies. For instance, according to a report of WHO, mojority of the people that live near airports have stress, tension and sleeplessness problems. So, reduced number of flights will result in all these benefits.

On the other hand, the drawbacks of this trend are far more damaging than imagined. It will partialy or completely shut down all the businesses related to airplanes. As overall number of flights will drop so all the airlines of other related businesses will face heavy looses. In addition, going from one country to other will be so difficult and time consuming let alone going from one continent to other. People will have to travel through bus or train which will be so time consuming and it will also affect certain businesses. For example, during the 2020 pendamic, all the airline companies faced exorbitant looses and some of them went bankrupt. So, the drawbacks of this trend are more than advantages.

In conclusion, although this appraoch have several ecosystem related benefits such as it will reduce air pollution as well as noise pollution near the airport areas but the disadvantages that general populace as well as businesses will face outweigh the advantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear position and discussing both environmental benefits and the disadvantages for individuals and businesses. The overall stance is maintained throughout the essay. However, certain ideas show some uneven development, which keeps the response at this level. For instance, while the environmental arguments regarding air and noise pollution are supported with relevant explanations and a reference to the WHO, the points concerning business impacts and alternative travel methods are slightly repetitive and under-developed, relying on general assertions rather than fully extended reasoning. To reach a higher level, every main idea needs to be thoroughly extended with deeper analysis and more comprehensive supporting details.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear organizational structure, featuring distinct introductory, body, and concluding paragraphs. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions between ideas, such as using 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to contrast the two main perspectives. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive, and referencing can occasionally feel rigid. For example, the progression within the second body paragraph could flow more naturally without relying on formulaic sentence openings. To achieve a higher standard, the writer should employ a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices while ensuring referencing is smooth and unobtrusive throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate to communicate the central arguments of the task, demonstrating an attempt to incorporate less common lexical items such as 'exorbitant' and 'ecosystem'. However, there are noticeable limitations in lexical control, leading to frequent errors in word choice, spelling, and word forms. Examples include 'numorous' instead of numerous, 'pendamic' instead of pandemic, 'looses' instead of losses, and 'partialy' instead of partially. Furthermore, some collocations are awkward, such as 'fly less times a year'. These inaccuracies indicate a restricted control of less common vocabulary. To progress, the writer needs to expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to spelling accuracy, and refine their mastery of word formation and collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over basic structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent, with several errors in syntax, punctuation, and article usage. For instance, the opening sentence contains a clumsy passive construction ('It is decided by some individuals that...'), and the introduction features a broken concessive clause ('although the environmental benefits but the disadvantages...'). Other issues include subject-verb agreement problems and missing articles in phrases like 'near airport areas'. These errors do not generally impede overall communication, but they persist throughout the text. To attain a higher band, the writer must produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over grammatical structures and punctuation.
