IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Environmental protection is the most crucial debate of present age where each human activity is paving a path to diverse global environmental hazards. While it is argued that people should limit the number of air travel trips or stop air travel altogether, I strongly believe that the advantages greatly outweigh disadvantage due to undeniable merits.
On of the reasons to favour least utilization or even no usage of air transport is the threats it imposes on mother nature. Environmental risks including stubborn air pollution, global warming and acid rain are mailny caused by the harmful release of excessive green house gas emissions from the aviation fuel used to drive the aircraft. With little air travel trips, these emissions can be minimized which can further lead to an overall healthy environment with pleasant temperature to breath in. Moreover, the abrupt variations in the weather patterns can be reduced through this trend. For instance, Japenese people have limited their air travels for many years since the revolution of clean and green environment prevailed in the country. This has elevated the overall health and well-being of human life there.
Conversely, a few number of disadvantages can also taken into account. With very less people opting for air travel, there are still few people who tend to fly occasionally. No matter the flight moves either domestically or internationally, the airplane has to leave the runway. The airfair of these people cannot generate enough revenue for the maintenaince and fuel for the aircraft which could be a disadvatage for the air travel companies. Also, people living far from home can miss important events by not getting in-touch with the family gatherings and extended kinship.
In conclusion, although there are certain limitations of bycotting air travel completely, few aspects of environmental protection can be taken into account for promoting this trend. This can have a positive impact on our future generations as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you believe the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages, and you discuss both sides of the comparison. The paragraph on emissions gives relevant reasons, including pollution and climate effects, while the disadvantages paragraph considers airline revenue and separation from family. However, some points are less fully developed than others. The claim that reduced flying will improve temperatures and weather patterns needs a clearer explanation, and the Japanese example is asserted rather than supported with specific evidence. The business impact is also only briefly explained, and the response could compare the scale of these costs more directly with the environmental gains. Developing these points with concrete examples would make the argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting reduced flying, a paragraph on disadvantages, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Conversely,” and “In conclusion” help signal the direction of the argument, and the main ideas are generally easy to follow. This shows sound organisation, with some flexibility in how ideas are connected. At times, however, the progression within paragraphs is less smooth: the discussion moves from emissions to weather and then to Japan without fully explaining the links. The conclusion also introduces “certain limitations” without clearly weighing them against the benefits. Use more precise referencing and transitions to show how each example supports your central comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “global environmental hazards,” “greenhouse gas emissions,” “aviation fuel,” and “maintenance.” Some less common expressions show ambition, but inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural. Examples include “least utilization,” “pleasant temperature to breath in,” “airfair,” and “extended kinship”; several phrases do not express the intended idea precisely. Spelling slips such as “mailny,” “Japenese,” and “disadvatage” also reduce control. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than ornate wording, and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for emissions, travel frequency, and airline operating costs would strengthen the argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “While it is argued…” and a conditional structure in “With very less people opting for air travel…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “On of the reasons” is missing a word, “a few number of disadvantages can also taken into account” has an incorrect noun phrase and passive construction, and “the airplane has to leave” shifts awkwardly from the general situation to a singular subject. There are also article, agreement, and verb-form problems in phrases such as “the threats it imposes” and “can be minimized which can further lead.” Review sentence boundaries and check each clause for a complete, correctly formed verb phrase. Greater accuracy in these structures would make your varied sentences clearer.
