IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent years, many people have choosen to fly less frequently or avoid air travel althogether because of its environmental impact. Although this may create some difficulties for individuals and businesses, i believe that the environmental benefits od reducing air travel are greater overall.
On the other hand, reducing air travel can cause difficulties for both individual and businesses. People who have relatives or friends living in other countries may not be able to visit them as often, while those who enjoy international travel may have to give up some holidays. Businesses can also be affected because some important meetings and negotiations are more effective when they are conducted face to face. For example, an indian company discussing a major contract with European client may prefer to meet in person rather than rely entirely on video calls. As a result, reducing flights could limit personal connections and create difficulties that depend on international relationships.
However, i believe that the environmental benefits are more significant. Air travel requries large amounts of aviations fuel and produces substantial carbon emissions, so reducing the number of flights can help lower the overall environmental impact of transportation. This is particularly important because climate change affects entire populations rather than only individual travellers. In addition, people can often replace some flights with trains, buses or online meetings, especially when travelling for short distance or attending business discussion. For instance, a company could hold a meeting with an overseas clients through a video conference instead of requiring several employees to fly aborad. Although this may not completely replace air travel, even a gradual reducation in unnecesary flights could contribute to lower emissions.
In conclusion, reducing air travel can create disadvantages for people who need to travel internationally and for business that rely on face to face commuincation. Nevertheless, i believe these disadvantages are outweighed by the environmental benefits of reducing unnecessary flights, particularly because lower air travel can help reduce carbon emissions and encourage the use of alternatie forms of transportation

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your response addresses both sides of the question and maintains a clear position: you acknowledge the effects on personal travel and business relationships, then explain why emissions reduction matters more. The examples of an Indian company negotiating with a European client and employees meeting online help make the discussion relevant. Your reasoning is generally extended, particularly when you connect aviation fuel use with climate change affecting whole populations. To strengthen the response further, develop the disadvantages and their consequences more precisely: the point that fewer visits may limit personal connections is relevant, but could explain why this matters to individuals. Likewise, clarify when face-to-face business meetings are essential and when alternatives are practical, so the comparison of benefits and drawbacks is more fully supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear, effective structure: an introduction states your view, separate body paragraphs consider disadvantages and environmental benefits, and the conclusion restates your judgement. The progression from personal and business impacts to emissions and alternatives is easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “On the other hand,” “However,” “For example,” and “In conclusion” guide the reader through the argument, and the examples are placed where they support the relevant point. Some connections are a little broad or repetitive, especially the repeated references to reducing flights and environmental benefits in the final paragraph. You could improve the flow by making the relationship between each example and the claim immediately explicit, and by using more varied referencing rather than repeating the same key phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “environmental impact,” “carbon emissions,” “international relationships,” “face to face,” and “video conference.” These choices communicate the argument clearly, and phrases such as “gradual reduction” and “replace some flights” show an attempt to express more specific ideas. However, several spelling errors and inaccurate word forms reduce precision, including “choosen,” “althogether,” “requries,” “aviations fuel,” and “alternatie.” Some collocations are also awkward, such as “for short distance” and “business discussion.” Proofread carefully and learn common topic-specific combinations as complete phrases. More precise alternatives for general wording would also help you express the environmental and economic effects with greater flexibility.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a range of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “Although,” “because,” and “while,” and most sentences communicate their meaning clearly. The contrast between the two sides is handled effectively, and the sentence beginning “Although this may create some difficulties…” is a clear example of controlled subordination. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and punctuation. For example, “both individual and businesses” needs a plural noun form, while “with European client” needs an article or plural form. In “travelling for short distance,” the singular count noun also requires a determiner. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent capitalisation of “I.” Review these patterns and proofread sentence boundaries to make your otherwise varied structures more consistently accurate.
