IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

People often argue about the disadvantages in protecting the environment with the flights taken to fly from one location to another. However, I completely disagree with with this idea because, reducing the usage of flights would increase the number of other vechicles running on the road. Other than this, time is very precious for every individuals and businesses. this essay will discuss about these very prespecitves.

A flight usually consists of hundreds of people travelling from one location to another. Consider a Situation where all of those people stop using the flight and take the road to travel. Number one, they have increased the load on the traffic flow, at the same time there will be hundreds of vechicles up and running in the streets which will ultimatly become a huge factor of carbon emission and would definitly cause the environmental damage more than taking a flight. We really need to calculate on the statistic wheather introducing hundreds of personal vehicals on the road is more benifical to the environment or using the flights to transport tons of people at a time to different locations without distrubing the daily life and producing more stress on the roads for the local communals.

Now a days time is very import for every indviduals and espically for the businesses which can not be ignored. Keeping in mind, we can not ignore the fact that flights save us a bunch of time when travelling long.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

Your position is clear: you disagree that reducing flights brings greater benefits, and you give two relevant concerns—road emissions and the time lost by individuals and businesses. The example of passengers switching to cars begins to explain the first point, but the comparison is asserted rather than supported, and the second point is only introduced before the response ends. Most importantly, the task asks whether environmental benefits outweigh disadvantages; your response does not adequately weigh both sides or explain the environmental benefits of flying less. The essay also falls 9 words short of the required minimum. Develop both sides, then state why one outweighs the other, using a specific example or explanation for each main point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an opening paragraph, a paragraph about road traffic and emissions, and a paragraph beginning to discuss time. Linking phrases such as “However,” “Other than this,” and “Keeping in mind” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph stops after “when travelling long,” leaving the second argument unfinished and the essay without a conclusion. Some connections are also unclear or mechanical; for example, “Number one” does not clearly organise the comparison that follows, and “Other than this” introduces a point without a clear relationship to the preceding sentence. Use complete paragraphs with one developed central idea each, and finish with a conclusion that restates your judgement.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “carbon emission,” “traffic flow,” “environmental damage,” and “businesses,” so the reader can identify the subject of your argument. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “load on the traffic flow.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or misspelled choices make parts difficult to read: “vechicles,” “ultimatly,” “definitly,” and “prespecitves.” Some expressions are unnatural or imprecise, including “calculate on the statistic” and “save us a bunch of time.” Aim for accurate collocations and spelling, and choose formal, precise wording. For example, describe the emissions produced by road travel rather than relying on broad claims about environmental damage.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “Consider a Situation where…” and a sentence linking increased traffic with emissions. However, complex structures are often faulty, and frequent errors sometimes make the meaning harder to follow. Examples include “I completely disagree with with this idea because, reducing…” (repeated preposition and incorrect punctuation), “time is very precious for every individuals” (number agreement), and “this essay will discuss about” (unnecessary preposition). The final sentence is incomplete, and the opening of the second body paragraph, “Now a days time is very import,” also contains errors that interrupt fluency. Practise complete sentence boundaries, subject–verb and singular/plural agreement, and accurate clause construction before adding more complex structures.
