IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some individuals have taken an initiative towards putting an end to flying by decreasing the number of their yearly booked flights. While it may cause businesses to halt their operations, I believe the environmental benefits like less pollution certainly outweigh the drawbacks.
Businesses running in different countries may be affected by this initiative of less flying as owners need to go to different parts of the world to continue their operations at multiple branches. For instance, a company running its business in Pakistan may need to send some resources from its headquaters to continue running their cooperation smoothly. If they can not travel easily, it might hinder their operations and eventually lead to loss.
Even though businesses need to travel in different countries through air, I believe that the reduction in number of flights largely help the environment. A large qualntity of fuel is required for one flight. This fuel can be saved to be used in other areas. A case in point is that an inter city flight takes litres of fuel, whereas if replaced by bullet trains this fuel can be used for running other beneficial things. Moreover, fuel burning contributes to carbon emissions and in turn leads to air pollution. This pollution can be prevented by reduction in amount of flights every year.
To sum it up, I believe that the reduction in number of flights can decrease the fuel usage and air pollution. The advantages definitely outweigh the disadvantages for businesses like reduction in growth of businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you believe reduced flying brings greater environmental benefits than the disadvantages for businesses. You address both sides, explaining that international operations may be disrupted and that fewer flights could reduce fuel use and air pollution. The examples of a company sending resources between branches and replacing some journeys with trains help make the discussion relevant. However, the business disadvantage is only briefly explained, and the environmental case relies mainly on fuel savings and pollution without developing wider effects or supporting the claims in detail. The conclusion repeats your view but introduces “reduction of growth” without explaining how this follows. Develop each main point with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and a more specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs consider disadvantages and benefits, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Even though,” and “To sum it up” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening of the second body paragraph concedes that businesses need to travel, but the relationship between this point and the environmental argument could be made more explicit. The final phrase about “reduction in growth of businesses” is also difficult to connect to the preceding discussion. Use clearer references and transitions, and organise each paragraph around one main claim followed by explanation and evidence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of task-related vocabulary, including “operations,” “carbon emissions,” “air pollution,” and “reduction,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “A case in point.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “taken an initiative towards putting an end to flying,” “yearly booked flights,” and “running their cooperation smoothly.” Spelling errors such as “headquaters” and “qualntity” also reduce accuracy. Some repetition of “fuel,” “businesses,” and “reduction” limits flexibility. Aim for more natural combinations, check spelling carefully, and use precise terms for the specific environmental and business effects you discuss.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession clause in “Even though businesses need to travel…” and a conditional structure in “If they can not travel easily, it might hinder their operations.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical issues remain: “the reduction in number of flights largely help” needs subject–verb agreement and an article (“the reduction in the number … helps”); “a large quantity of fuel … This fuel can be saved to be used” is awkwardly constructed; and “a company … may need to send some resources” has an unclear reference to what is being sent. Review agreement, articles, and sentence construction, while continuing to use varied clauses.
