IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.
Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Individuals have chosen to minimize the times they fly annually or to stop flying altogether. Although it will result in many environmental benefits, but I believe that thee disadvantages for individuals and business outweigh these benefits because today air travel is estential for international connections.
Firstly, reduced air travel can create difficultiues for individuals at a personal level. There are many people who live away from their families, maybe for a better future, and would want to visit back home. If their travelling is reduced or completely stopped it will be hard for them to meet their loved ones. Moreover, if an individual lives in America and their family lives in Pakistan, travelling through plane would be the most convinent option. Moreover, for businesses that have branches abroad, it would be hard for them to communicate just through internet.
On the other hand, reducing flights can benefit the environment by lowering carbon emissions. Airplanes release greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming and fewer flights could help reduce environmental impact. For example, people who have to travel to nearby spaces may use buses or trains instead of planes. While for businesses who have to fly to places to make important decisions, there can be once a month flying option for them, which results in reduced travel, hence avoiding unnecessary travelling.
In conclusion, although reducing air travel can help protect environment, I believe that the disadvantages for individuals and businesses are more significant, especially in a world that is too fast. Air travels remains quite significant for international relationships, family connections and economic development. Therefore, reducing flights is much more practical than completely putting a ban on it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You answer both sides of the question and state a consistent position: you believe the disadvantages outweigh the environmental benefits. The examples about visiting family abroad and businesses communicating across borders are relevant, and you acknowledge that fewer flights can reduce emissions. However, the comparison is not fully developed. The environmental case is brief, and the business argument that internet communication is difficult is asserted rather than explained with a specific situation. Your conclusion also shifts slightly from reducing flights to saying this is more practical than a complete ban, without clearly distinguishing that point from the question of whether the benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Develop and compare the consequences more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for disadvantages and benefits, and a conclusion. The main ideas generally progress in a logical order, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help the reader follow the argument. Some cohesion is mechanical or repetitive, however: “Moreover” is used twice in close succession, and the relationship between the examples and the claims is not always made explicit. The final sentence introduces the idea of a ban, which is not the central comparison in the task, so the conclusion feels less tightly connected to the argument. Use more varied linking and clearer references between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “carbon emissions,” “greenhouse gases,” “global warming,” and “international connections.” These terms make the subject clear, and phrases such as “economic development” suit the discussion. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “estential,” “difficulties” misspelled as “difficultiues,” and “convinent.” Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “visit back home,” “nearby spaces,” and “a world that is too fast.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and fluency. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, describe “nearby destinations” and “a fast-paced world.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“If their travelling is reduced…”) and a concession in the conclusion. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. The opening uses an incorrect contrast structure: “Although it will result…, but I believe…”; use either “Although…, I believe…” or “It will…, but I believe…”. There are also issues with articles and number, as in “protect environment” and “businesses that have branches abroad,” where the intended meaning could be expressed more precisely. “Air travels remains” has subject–verb agreement trouble, and “there can be once a month flying option” is awkwardly formed. Review agreement, articles, and sentence patterns while continuing to use complex clauses.
