IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people have resorted to not using airplanes in order to reduce enviorment pollution. Though I think it is a good initiative but we still can't deny the benefit that flying provides us in our daily lives and businesses.

The airplanes burn a lot of fuel to fly from one place to another. Carbon emission from aircrafts are one of the main sources of air pollution in the current time. Many individuals especially the celebrities and upper class people take really short duration flights. This can lead to wastage of fuel and harm to the enviorment.

On the other hand , airplanes are the fastest way to travel from one place to another. It is much more convenient to use airplane if we are moving from one country to another. Even in big countries like The United States going from New York City to California by other transportation can take days even weeks. In situations like that flying can save crucial hours of our life. Also in cases of emergency wasting a few hours can be critical. For example, if an accident occurs and there is no hospital with the right treatment or equipment nearby the injured can be transfered to a better hospital via helicopter more quickly . Which can possibly save the patients life . Moreover, for work some people need to be in different parts of the world in a short amount of time. For example, professional football players during the world cup need to travel from one city to another sometimes one country to another every few days. That is not possible without airplanes.

In conclusion, the benefits of flying significantly outweight the disadvantages. But i believe there should be rule for minimum flight distance of around 150 kilometers in order to minimize the harms airplanes do.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you acknowledge the environmental case for reducing flights but conclude that flying’s benefits outweigh the disadvantages. You address both sides with relevant examples, including fuel use and short flights, alongside international travel, emergencies and work commitments. This covers the task well, but the environmental benefits are less fully explained than the practical advantages. For instance, you mention aircraft emissions but do not explore how fewer flights would reduce pollution or benefit the climate. Some examples, such as footballers’ travel, illustrate the need for speed but could be linked more directly to businesses and the question’s comparison. Develop the environmental side and explain why your proposed minimum-distance rule would be effective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on environmental harm, a longer paragraph on the benefits of flying, and a conclusion. The contrast between the two main arguments is easy to follow, and examples generally appear in a sensible order. However, the benefits paragraph contains several distinct points—convenience, emergencies and professional travel—so clearer internal organisation or separate paragraphs would help the reader follow the progression. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “For example” and “Also.” The opening phrase “Though I think it is a good initiative but” also combines two contrasting structures awkwardly. Use a wider range of transitions and make references between sentences more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to discuss the topic and communicate your main ideas, including “carbon emission,” “wastage of fuel,” “crucial hours” and “minimum flight distance.” However, the range is limited in places by repeated general wording such as “one place to another,” “benefit” and “harm.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “enviorment pollution,” “short duration flights,” and “the patients life” do not express the ideas cleanly. Spelling errors such as “outweight,” “transfered” and “enviorment” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary, such as “aviation emissions” and “short-haul flights,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional example beginning “if an accident occurs” and a relative clause in “the injured can be transfered to a better hospital.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. For example, “Though I think it is a good initiative but” uses two contrasting markers where one is needed, and “Carbon emission from aircrafts are” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence about the injured person also needs a clearer grammatical construction, while “the patients life” requires an apostrophe. Review agreement, articles, possessives and sentence boundaries, and proofread punctuation around introductory phrases and conjunctions.
