IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

A few individuals have made decisions in decreasing the flying frequency per year or to terminate flying inorder to reduce the environmental problems caused by frequent flights. I believe there are significant environmental benefits by reducing the number of flights at the same time there are drawbacks while considering businesses and economical growth.

With the advancement of technology, using flights as a frequent means of commute is more evident now-a-days. Inorder to save time and to reach destinations on time, people choose to fly rather than taking a road trip. With this increase in the number of flights being operated day by day, the environmental pollution is increasing. The amount of greenhouse gasses being emitted affects the ozone layer, which in-turn results in global warming. The melting down of glaceirs in Antartica is an example of global warming. Further more, the high frequency sound produced during the take-off and landing can affect the birds and other living beings, and for the people working on the tarmac or ground staff, which can lead to health issues causing deafness and other health concerns.

While there are more environmental benefits of reducing flights, it can affect business and other individuals who rely on flights. Most of the business meetings are held in different parts of the world, and if there is a decrease in the number of flights being operated, it can affect the economical development. As an example, the business conclave held at different countries were the famous people who excel in business are invited to come together and bring new initiaties. Also, the limited number of flights can levi more flight charges on individuals, which in-turn will be a huge burden for a middle class men to afford this. As a result, it can affect the economical stability, more interaction between nations, import and export. Most of the countries depend each other for materials and goods, raw materials, evrything will be affected.

In conclusion, reducing the number of flights has its on advantages and disadvantages. We should consider methods of reducing air pollution and saving our nature, at the same time maintaining our economic growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you see environmental gains from fewer flights, while recognising costs for businesses and individuals. You address both sides and give relevant examples, including emissions and the effect on international business meetings and travel costs. This meets the task, but the comparison is not fully resolved: the conclusion says both benefits and disadvantages matter without directly stating whether the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Some points also need fuller explanation. For instance, the link between aircraft emissions and ozone-layer damage is asserted rather than explained, and the business-conclave example is difficult to follow. State your judgement explicitly and develop the strongest examples with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning to make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for environmental effects and disadvantages, and a conclusion. The progression from emissions to noise, then to business and personal costs, is generally easy to follow. You also use linking expressions such as “While,” “As an example,” and “As a result” to signal relationships between ideas. To make the organisation more consistently effective, ensure each example clearly supports the point immediately before it. The business-conclave sentence is hard to connect to the claim about fewer flights, and the final list of imports, exports, and materials feels abrupt. Some transitions, including repeated “in-turn” and “at the same time,” are mechanical; use clearer referencing and more varied links between claims.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic-related vocabulary, including “greenhouse gasses,” “global warming,” “economical development,” and “import and export.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, which limits precision: “terminate flying,” “economical growth,” and “levi more flight charges” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “glaceirs,” “Antartica,” and “initiatives” (written as “initiatives” incorrectly in the response) also reduce control. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “reduce air travel,” “economic growth,” and “impose higher fares.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While there are more environmental benefits…” and a conditional structure with “if there is a decrease…”. Most of the meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are noticeable. For example, “people choose to fly rather than taking a road trip” mixes verb patterns; use “rather than take.” In “the business conclave… were the famous people,” the clause structure and agreement are unclear. There are also missing spaces after full stops and inconsistent comma use, as in “global warming. The melting.” Work on parallel verb forms, complete sentence structure, and punctuation around clauses to improve accuracy while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
