Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is widely acknowledged that many individuals have decided to reduce how often they fly every year or to stop air travel completely. I strongly agree with this point of view because the positive impact on the environment is much more greater than negative effects on businesses and everyday people. This essay will discuss both sides of the argument and explain why the environmental benefits are more important.

To begin with, as long as a substantial number of individuals believe that reducing their annual flights will have a positive impact on the environment. In fact, this decision will play a major role in reducing global warming. Moreover, if air travelers limit their air travel, fossil fuels will be saved. This conservation of fossil fuels help us to use them for other essential purposes, such as cooking and generating electricity. Additionally, it will help reduce the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other green house gases, which have a adverse effect on environment, provided that higher authorities implement this type of policy.

On the other hand, there are numerous negative effect of this regulation on individuals and cooperate businesses. Indeed, so long as business owners cannot travel abroad, it can negatively effect their sales and revenue. Furthermore, a vast majority of individual employees work abroad to support their household. Besides, if lawmakers implemented strict flight restrictions, these workers would be separated from their parents and children, which does not strengthen family bonds.

In conclusion, although traveling by planes has harmful impacts on environment, such as emission of greenhouse gasses that result into global warming. Nevertheless, restricting flights causes difficulties for international businesses and separated families.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe the environmental benefits outweigh the disadvantages, and you address both sides of the question. The environmental paragraph gives relevant reasons, including reduced fossil-fuel use and lower greenhouse-gas emissions. You also identify possible effects on business revenue and workers’ family relationships. However, these disadvantages are asserted rather than explained in detail, and the conclusion mainly repeats the opposing effects instead of clearly reaffirming why the benefits outweigh them. The claim that saved fuel could be used for cooking and electricity also needs a clearer link to reduced flying. Develop each main point with a specific explanation or example, and make the comparison between environmental gains and personal or business costs more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two sides, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the argument. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The opening sentence of the first body paragraph begins “as long as,” leaving it as a dependent clause rather than a complete statement, and “Nevertheless” in the conclusion does not clearly express the relationship between the preceding ideas. The conclusion also does not resolve the comparison established in the introduction. Use linking expressions that accurately show contrast or result, and connect each paragraph’s points more explicitly so the argument progresses rather than simply listing effects.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “global warming,” “fossil fuels,” “carbon dioxide,” “revenue,” and “flight restrictions.” These terms make the subject clear, and some less common expressions are attempted. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or imprecise: “cooperate businesses” does not convey the intended meaning, “negative effect” is repeated, and “result into global warming” is not a natural phrase. There are also spelling and form issues, such as “green house gases” and “gasses.” Aim for more precise, natural combinations and avoid repeating broad terms such as “effect.” For example, distinguish between the environmental “impact” and the economic “cost” of reduced flying.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional clauses (“if air travelers limit their air travel”) and a relative clause (“which have a adverse effect”). Meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. The first body paragraph opens with the incomplete clause “as long as a substantial number of individuals believe,” and there are agreement and article errors in “This conservation … help” and “a adverse effect.” The conclusion also begins with a dependent “although” clause without completing its contrast in the same sentence. Work on forming complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause structure. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence forms clearer and more effective.
