IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people have decided to reduce the number of times they fly every year or to stop flying altogether.

Do you think the environmental benefits of this development outweigh the disadvantages for individuals and businesses?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

As environment is being affected by pollution created from aircrafts, people have taken a decision of limiting their fly or preventing themselves from flying completely. Though this decision may ameliorate the condition of the environment by reducing the emission of toxic gas and the waste in the environment, it doesn't overpower the disadvantages people face since aircraft significantly saves time of the businessmen by the reduction of travel time and helps people to tackle emergency situation.

Heavy use of aircraft has deteriorate the environment by producing hazardous gas. As people are preferring to use aircrafts, the use of aircrafts are increasing day by day. As a result, the emission of gas that are detrimental to health such as carbon-monoxide is increasing too fast and causing people to suffer from several respiratory diseases such as asthma. Another drawback is that as many people are gathered in the airport, they are prone to pollute the environment by throwing waste here and there.

Nontheless, fly through aircraft provides great advantages not only reducing the travel time but also handling emergency situation like moving a patient to a better healthcare facilities. In the present era, a notable amount of time is being wasted in commuting. Flying by aircraft saves the remarkable amout of time of the people specially businessmen by minimizing the time. On the other hand, it also helps to move a patient to better medication as quickly as possible. Sometimes, there occurs situation when a patient has to be moved to another city or country since the medication he/she needs is not available at that facility. To save the patient's life, fast transfer to another far facility is needed and aircraft becomes the best choice for this.

In conclusion, although limiting the fly may make the environment better by reducing dangerous gas and waste, it doesn't outweigh the disadvantages it causes by increasing the travel time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you argue that the disadvantages of reducing flights outweigh the environmental benefits. You address both sides, noting emissions and airport litter before explaining the time-saving value of air travel and its role in urgent medical transfers. These are relevant points, but the environmental case is not fully developed: airport waste is asserted without explaining how reduced flying would meaningfully reduce it, and the discussion focuses mainly on individual convenience rather than the question’s business impacts. The business point about saving time is brief and general. To strengthen the response, explain the scale or significance of each benefit and disadvantage, and connect each example directly to why one side outweighs the other.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present contrasting considerations, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “As a result,” “Nonetheless,” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The first body paragraph moves from aircraft emissions to airport litter without showing how these points relate, while the conclusion reduces the argument to increased travel time and does not reflect the medical-emergency example. Some references, such as “this decision” and “it,” could be more precise. Group related points and use the conclusion to summarise the main comparison, not just one disadvantage.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “emission,” “hazardous gas,” “respiratory diseases,” “commuting,” and “healthcare facilities.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt more formal expressions such as “detrimental to health.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “limiting their fly,” “fly through aircraft,” “better medication,” and “remarkable amount of time.” There are also spelling errors, for example “Nontheless” and “amout.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Build a bank of common collocations for transport and environmental impacts, and check spelling and word forms during revision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses beginning with “Though,” “As,” and “since,” and most of the argument remains understandable. Some grammatical errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles, and plurals. For example, “Heavy use of aircraft has deteriorate” needs a past participle, while “the use of aircrafts are increasing” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “a patient to a better healthcare facilities,” the article and plural form do not agree. The opening sentence also contains a long, awkwardly connected structure. Review agreement and verb forms, and divide long sentences where necessary; this will improve accuracy while preserving your attempts at complex grammar.
